David,
Email me your snail mail address and I'll mail you copies of the drawings.
Nice progress, you're ahead of me, and I started 3 years ago. []. I did get distracted with other projects though.

I was told by a couple of people who had them that there did not seam to be enough elevator authority on their's, and that they were also tail heavy. I did built up the tail feathers for mine (laminated the exterior parts), to a more scale outline too, and added a bay to the elevator/stab. Looking at scale drawings, the larger stab and elevator look more like the size they should be. A little more work, but it'll look better I think. I'll find out someday if Balsa USA had a good reason to make them smaller I guess. I'm sure I'll still be adding nose weight, but maybe not as much.

Sorry about your crash Stephane. It looks salvagable though.

Here's a pic of the tail feathers. This made me finally drag the box back down, now to clear off the build bench! Thanks!

Thanks, the address is: 119 Royal Crest Dr., Columbia, SC 29229-9077. I like your tail feathers and stab much better than the solid balsa one that came in the kit. Both of the stock pieces had slight warps in them as well! I'll post more pics as I make progress.

Looking good David!
Looks like we're at at about the same point. I'd expected to have had mine covered and started painting by now, but I got a good case of this chest cold crud going around, and haven't accomplished anything significant down in the "cave" in three weeks.

Have you found a source for wing roundels the proper size? Master Decals are too small, and I've been looking at a couple of options like Custom Cut Graphics to do them. They'd be seperate discs for each color though, maybe a challenge!
I'd originally assumed I'd paint the markings, bit I'm not so sure about masking those circles.

I hadn't forgotten about sending you copies of the drawings for the spinner.... welll.... honestly I had I guess. Will do soon though.

Heres's how I hope mine'll look someday soon....

Thanks! I haven't found a source for the roundels, please let me know if your do. No problem on the plans, sometimes life gets in the way of our hobby If you need a source for a fiberglass cowling, let me know. My kit came with the two piece ABS one that I didn't care for. We both must have good taste, thats the scheme I am going to finish mine in as well! Do you have any ideas for the white zig-zag pattern on the fues? I made some more progress yesterday - mocked up the machine gun and landing gear.

Regards,

Dave

Dave,
Bill Fulmer at [link=http://www.customcutgrafix.com/]Custom Cut Graphics [/link] said it'd be no problem doing the double arrow heads, he sent me a lay-out actually that if (I can remember ) I'll forward it too you.

Did you make an fiberglass cowl? I'm not sure (because I havn't finished off the spinner yet), but it looks like the cowl might need to be opened up some to look right with the spinner. The stock one is a little more "rounded" at the front (too much like a typical cowl) than it should be.

Mike, I had a fiberglass one made. It's an exact replica of the ABS one that came with the kit. You'll have to let me see a pic of your spinner when you're done. Thanks for the lead on the double arrows. Can he also do the roundels and other markings?

Dave,
Yes, he can do the roundels too. I''ll forward you the email (with graphic showing the arrowheads) he sent me if you'll send me your Email address.
Send to [email protected]

I don't anticipate any progress on my Bristol for a few days. I'm building a 1/3 scale Spandau for [link=http://www.bealmear.com/dawn_patrol/fokker_e-1.htm]Art Sheltons E-1 Eindecker[/link]. The guns are the Arizona Model Aircrafters laser cut kit. Pretty amazing! I built two smaller ones from AZM for my Dr1 last year.

Mike, thanks for sending the info on the graphics. Man, I checked out your web site - you guys do some incredible work - WOW! I wondered if you might answer another questions for me. I'm going to put the roll-over cage on the bristol - but have no idea on how to secure the rigging to the top of the roll-over cage (like in the photo). Any advice would be greatly appreciated?

Mike, Gene Barton, 337 Bruce Road, Lake Ozark, MO 65049 (573)964-6718 makes a spun aluminum spinner that he sells for $45, plus $5 shipping & handling. For an additional $20 he will cut the prop doors as well as drill and tap.

WOW! That's great. If I bugger mine up, I'll be contacting him. Are you getting one? (Dumb question probably). If they're good, Balsa USA should work a deal with, or at least recomend him. Beats the (I think) $125.00 AZM supposedly has one for that's basically a roughed out kit with lots of work to do yet.
Thanks!

Mike, still out there? Any progress on the Bristol? My build was delayed because of a move/retirement. I'm back to it and I'm covering mine.

Be careful with the tail, keep it light. I used built up tail feathers and a Magnum .52 4 stroke and put everything in the nose. The plane is on the reaward edge of the cg range. I wound un building my own wheels as Williams Brothers was out of business at the time. Neat plane with lots of nostalga. I have only placed about 10 flights on mine this year though.

Thanks for the tip and photos. I wonder if you might take a picture of your tail wheel or tail skid and share it with me. I haven't made up my mind on which to go with? What did you do. I found an aluminum spinner that looks like the one in the full scale aircraft I'm duplicating, so it adds plenty of weight to the front end and at this point almost balances perfectly.

In reguards the the previous post about the Gene Barton Spinner, it was designed for the Funaero R/C Albatros DII and DIII. We believe that it will be to big for the BUSA Bristal Scout. It was designed for a 1/5.5 scale plane with a 4 and 7/8" diameter. Mike (FunAero R/C)

Hello Mike. We met before in Columbia, SC. I realize the spinner is a little big and wasn't designed for the Bristol Scount. Being a stand-off scale model, I didn't think it would make much of a difference since I was't able to find anything out there that would be any closer to a scale appearance. Do you think it will be a problem running that spinner?

Thanks.

I will be most happy to supply photos of the tailwheel assembly. I decided function over scale on this issue. I also chose to model the racing version of this plane and on that plane the huge spinner had been removed in favor of engine cooling.

Plane looks great! Nice cover and the decals look good as well. Even thought they are vinyl cut graphics you can still apply these with soap and water. Just spray the back of the decal with soapy water and "slide" them into place. The pre-masking tape will come off with additional water rubbed over it. I put all the vinyl cut decals on my M-1 using this methodwith perfect alignment. Also it gave me the opportunity to get the bubbles out from under the decals as the water evaporated. I like to use watered down Windex for this process because it evaporates faster. I forgot to supply photos of my tail wheel. I will get those this afternoon and post them. Looks like it is to late though! OOPS

Nice plane, good luck with the maiden.

Thanks. I applied iron-on fabric to mine and then painted it with Latex paint. After I apply all the decals, I will apply two coats of flat polyurethane. Hopefully, doing so will take the shine off the vinyl decals. I've been using soapy water in a spray bottle myself in lieu of Windex. It seems to be working well, though the fuselage roundels had a couple of kinks in them which I suspect was caused by the round fuselage that tapers towards the tail. I had built a tail skid out of oak, but scrapped it for a Dubro .60 tail wheel assembly.

Thanks,

Dave
