Hi all,

The FA SE5a is not as scale as the Albatross although they are both pretty much off scale. I am sure you will have fun building it. In the Kit Builder section, a couple year back someone post a very detailed built of the kit. I was very impressed of how detailed the write up is. Sadly, the builder did not complete the kit and it has been at least a year since the last post. I finally got the batteries for my Albatros and it will fly soon. I am using the DX7 for it. DP

Hey DP, what was the final weight on your DIII?
Hi Propnut,

The dry weight without the batteries is 11 lbs. I have not checked the final weight yet. DP

Ok guys, I've noticed this thread has kinda slowed down...LOL! Everyone is waiting for Dai's maiden flight but until then I have a question. Since these Albatros's are tail heavy has anyone thought about powder coating the spinner on this plane to add nose weight? I'm thinking if you powder coat the inside and outside it could really help. Might not have to add so much lead to the nose. I was all so thinking the powder coating would be tough enough not to chip and you can get coatings in various colors these days.

Powder coat would be nice, since it would not chip easy. I would doubt that it would add enough weight to make much difference though. Bolt some lead to the motor mount, that makes a difference.

Dai Phan said a long time ago in this thread that the Albatros might be a hanger queen, I am beginning to think that he is a prophet as well as an amazing model airplane builder.

The plane had been flown but crashed on the first flight. As the result, I cannot bear to see the remains... I can't even think about RC planes at all without bringing back the painful memories.... I have ebayed all my planes and now am taking on stamp collecting. See my new "no panic attack easy going" hobby here...

Actually, it will be very soon of the maiden and I assure you it ain't gonna to be a hangar queen. The tail you should not sheet it and just cover over the open structure like someone on RC Groups did. DP

I know what it's like to wait for the maiden flight. Since I live in Iowa, I have to wait for spring to fly my completed Kawasaki Ki-61.

Todd, I hope you told your kitty that Ki-61 isn't a scratching post!

Wow !!!! That's a nice Ki-61. Is that a kit? Is that a cat or a puppy tiger? DP

The Tony is from Don Smith plans, but I found a fiberglass fuse to use. The cat is a purebread breed called a Bengal, and it knows better than to scratch my planes!

You brought my humility to level unknown to man. I am sure you are a plastic modeler too? I got first place at the West Demoine Iowa Chapter IPMS with my DV Albatross and third place with my Dr1 ( all 1/48 scale) back in 1997. Perhaps we crossed path back then and not knowing it. DP

If you look closely right on the wing root, you can see a HUGE scratch per courtesy of your Bengal. Time for the grill I sez.... Just kidding! DP

For those who have flown the Albatross, what is the proper CG for this plane and are there anything I should watch out for on the maiden? Thanks! DP

The Recommended CG in the Plans is OK, I think it ends up on the spar. The problem comes with setting it. The top wing is so high that you may believe you have it balanced with the tail a bit low. You find out that you can be way off and the tail will sag just a bit. Make sure the tail is level or above level a little with the CG on the spar, and you should be fine.
Good luck on your flight, hope it all turns out well! Here are a couple of in flight photos to get you in the right mindset.

Thank you Todd. Did you fly the plane with the big scale prop as seen on your non-flying photos? If yes, what size of prop is that? DP

No, the scale prop is a modified 18" wood one I had laying around. The flight prop I'm using now is a 15X7 if I remember right.

Last night I look at the battery set up with my electric Guru friend Gary and the whole thing looks very "scary". Two big Lipos stuck half way through the fireway making it looks like roadside IDEs. I am quite sure if this thing flies away, the cops will think it is an RC bomb! I will post pictures when it is ready to fly. DP
