Dear JDavis:
The PIPE Here again...and a LONG TIME TREKKER all the way from the "Orignial Series", in the late 1960s!!! (VERY young THEN, though)...
This video, as far as I know, is the VERY FIRST attempt I've EVER seen in making ANY Star Trek space vessel operate as a model aircraft guided by RC! Just wondering...WHERE did you get this video from, anyway???
I found a website not very long ago that's about a bunch of Trekkers (over-18 years-of-age Star Trek fans are "Trekkers"... the YOUNGER ones are supposedly the "Trekkies", or so I've heard) that have been designing their OWN starships from Gene Roddenberry's universe, at http://www.trekships.org/ ...ALL the "regulation" starships are supposed to be there, of the Federation, anyway, and I've ALWAYS wanted to do Kirk's originial ship, or the refitted one from the movies (there WERE two of them...the original one AND the 1701-A), as well as Jean-Luc's 1701-D Galaxy class version, for RC flying!
Now THAT video has got ME thinking about "IT" again...perhaps a Li-Po batterie'd version of Capt. ARCHER's NX-01, perhaps, that came around some NINETY years before Capt. Robert April commanded the 1701??? TOO TEMPTING to pass up!
Yours Sincerely,
The PIPE!

I don't know where on the web this video came from but the RC flyers are in Japan! Towards the end of the video clip, the guy says (in a funny voice) "It's flying!" and then at the end says something to the effect that "There is still some (power) left."
Somehow I still prefer the classic Snoopy on his doghouse or the flying lawn mower. Still, it brings up an interesting point: Where are all the wierd "futuristic" models? And can you have a "scale" model of an aircraft (spaceship) that doesn't (yet) exist?
For example, here is a Japanese anime favorite:
The Machine
The YF-21 Advanced Variable Fighter (AVF) Prototype was designed and built in 2039 by General Galaxy as their entry for the Project Super Nova design contest sponsored by the UN Spacy to develop the replacment for the aging VF-11 Thunderbolt. The YF-21 was one of two designs selected for the final competition at the New Edwards Flight Center on planet Eden; the other design being the YF-19 AVF designed by Yang Neumann of Shinsei Industries.
Unlike the more traditionally designed YF-19, the YF-21 was a showcase of leading-edge combat technology. Many of fighter's systems were advanced prototypes, based on captured Zentraedi and cutting-edge human systems. The most advanced of these were the Brainwave Control System (BCS) and Brain Direct Imaging (BDI) system. These enabled the pilot to control all functions of the aircraft literally with his thoughts.
Two prototypes of the YF-21 were constructed, with the first one having a conventional flight control system and the second one equipped with the BCS and BDI systems. Though the second prototype YF-21 was lost in the "Sharon Apple" incident and theYF-19 was declared the winner of Project Super Nova, the manufacturer was not discouraged. Two years later General Galaxy released the VF-22 Sturmvogel II, an advanced combat aircraft based on the YF-21 prototype. Although the VF-22 did not include the controversial BDI and BCS control systems of the second YF-21 prototype, it proved to be an extremely able aircraft and was purchased by the UN Spacy on a limited basis as a special force

ever go to a tech site called [link=http://www.slashdot.org]slashdot.org[/link]? they are the ones that listed it....
anyway, ever sense st:enterprise came out, i wanted to do a edf version of the nx-01, i just never had the skilz needed to do anything like that.
a real long time ago, i was thinking that the 1701 would make a neat-o heli. this was before i knew much about rc and aerodynamics... then again, isnt the f-4 proof that enough thrust could make a brick wall fly?
anyway, let me know if you get anywhere.

I would love to see pictures of this ship.
Was it the shuttle, HMS ship, or the 1701 version???

A member of our club, NVRC, built an RC Version of the Enterprise several years ago. It flew pretty well in fact. I think he even published an article/plans in Model Avaition. Not 100% sure bout the article...

More (surprising details) on the YF-21 at the following sites. Talk about LANDING GEAR!!! I think I'm gonna need a lot more servos!

Japan's sci-fi anime fans can stand up to trekkies any day.

Very Cool! I wonder (for scale competition) if you could have the saucer section seperate and fly on it's own? Hmmm....
Pipe, FYI- I've often heard "Trekkers" decribed as fans of the show(s), and "Trekkies" decribed as the "dedicated" group of fans who attend (often) the ST conventions in Star Fleet garb or dressed up as Klingons, Vulcans, etc.

OK.... ya'll better look at this. I too have worked over ways to make a starship fly but never was happy with any of the drawing. Then I found this simple set of plans..http://www.backyardflyer.com/BY/clic...2/starship.asp

I have seen an article in the english mag RC Model world, traplet publications ( I have the mag at home ) The enterprise in question is from the new generation prog ( sorry not a real treky dont know the id ). But it looks really good in the article. If someone is really intersted I could scan a page. PS the span should be more a saucer diameter reading....
Enjoy. Best regards Steve

At just 23.5†span this all wood construction model based on the TV ‘sci-fi space-cruiser’
and is powered by a .40 two-stroke engine. This is a unique and completely different type of R/C flying model. Not for beginners***
Construction: Balsa/Ply
Wingspan: 23.5 inch
Engine: 1x.40 type
Radio: 4 functions
Difficulty: Expert

Geistware, I think it was the 1701 version if memory serves. You may do a search in Model Avaition for the article. I think you'll find it. The Author/builder/designer's name is Luther Hux.

If I remember correctly, someone used to market an "Enterprise" RC kit. It seems as thought it was made of foam. I can't recall which mag used to carry the ad, but it was one of those small black and white box type adds with a drawing. I would go back and look, but I purged my back issues about two months ago.
