Default Need Air Force clarification

Hello,

I'm building an F4 Phantom to honor my late uncle who flew one in Vietnam. I'd like to get the scheme as accurate as possible. My main question is I know that Navy pilots have the initials "CDR." before the pilot's name under the canopy. Now, does the Air Force use the same initials for "commander" or is it done differently? Thanks to anyone who knows!

I would assume that since the Air Force doesn't have the rank of Commander, it wouldn't be done at all. You may see something like Lt. XXX, or Col. XXX.

The Services use the RANK abbreviation prior to the name.

Hi Steve

Although I'm retired Air Force myself, I had to do a web search to check what rank identification was placed on the aircraft. Try a web search for Steve Ritchie (MIG ace in Vietnam) and note that on his F-4, the rank was abbreviated in capital letters ( he was a captain, hence CAPT). The equivalent to a full Commander in the US Navy is Lieutenant Colonel for the Air Force, Army and Marines and is abbrieviated as LTC.

[]Sorry but the Air Force did use CAPT to identify pilots and back seaters. Check out the pics I found of Ritchie.

Also, Robert F. Dorr has at least one pic of an F-4E from the 34th TFS/388th TFW out of Korat in his book Vietnam Mig Killers (P70) that shows CAPT painted on the lower canopy frame to identify the pilot.
