Color on the stab and elevator. The paint masks worked great. Have to wait 24hrs for the Clearcoat to set

And on to one of the wings. Boy the red paint is a bear to clean out of the spray gun. I want to avoid having a red tint to the clear coat.

Great pictures!! And you are doing a teriffic job? My progress has been slow lately. I do have the tail and fuselage glassed so I am coming. Also made the removal horizonal stabilizer detachable. Have you used a servo to make your tail wheel steerable? I have been trying to think of a good way to do this but none of my ideas seem good. I probably should have thought about this much earlier but I guess I thought that maybe I could get by with a free wheeling tail wheel. Now that I think more about it. It does not seem like a good idea. Do you or any of the others watching this thread have any good pictures or ideas to post?

Hi Bob,

Good to hear your making progress, .....any progress is good progress. Free wheeling would be a scary thing.
I modeled my tail wheel after the full sized one. there are cables coming out the back end for steering control, they attach to the rudder servo just inside of the rudder cable going to the rudder in a pull-pull configuration
I'm using flex push rod housing at the exits for anti-chaf duty
The second photo shows a similar setup on a DO27 model. Third is SIMCO's tail wheel setup with a single push rod control from post #46

Hope that helps, look forward to seeing other Ideas

Completed the major painting portion of the program. I found at the local hobby store some Metal Masters Paint labled "Burnt Iron" that simulates the titianium exhaust ducts very nicely, has a coppery color to it. Now its on to electronics and power plant integration.

Got the rudder and tail wheel wired up and operating. Also secured the rudder to the fin using #4 x 3/4" socket head sheet metal screws.

Thats excellent marnochs - looks very sharp. I have been saving all the pics you have posted. I am waiting for some 6ft flat grain 1/2 X 1/4 and 1/4 X 1/4 white spruce to arrive then I can get going on the wing. I may put a new bench together first though.

Have you weighed it yet? Is your horizontal and/or vertical built so that you can remove them?

Thanks
tks1

Hi Marnochs..

A while a go I built and successfully flew a 9.5 ft all aluminum Pilatus...Your Pilatus looks fantastic!! Is the best one I have seen, You are tempting me to build another one!! ..I have a constructive comment....Knowing well the full size Pilatus, I hope you DO NOT leave those nasty looking wheels which will spoil the looks of such a beautiful machine you have built. Big wheels and small rims gives the Pilatus its very distinctive look!!

Hi allmetal plane,

Thanks for the compliment, if you have any suggestions on where to get/buy 6 inch wheels with small hubs, I'm all ears. The Sullivan Skylites were the closest I found so far, and alot better looking than plastic hub wheels. The 6 inch wheels are 1/5 scale of the Goodyear 11.00x12 (32 inch diameter) main wheel tires the fullsize Porter uses.

Progress on the wings - have aileron and flaps hooked up and operating, installed pins in hinges per plans. Carved out a Pitot pickup about the right size and mounted it next to the flap cover, now I just have to be carefull not to break it off.
I configured the engine choke to be manually opererated by opening the front passenger door and pulling the upper line in the picture. I'm using Graupner connectors with molded sockets (very secure connection)

Hi again Marnochs..

As you see, I have been following your oustanding project building process.

I am aware that it is hard to find proper scale wheels..

This is what I would like to suggest you do. It may require a little extra work but it is well worth, again, you airplane looks FANTASTIC

Get the proper size DUBRO inflatable wheels, they are a bit heavier, but with such a big wing in your airplane, weight will not be an issue, in fact my Pilatus flew MUCH better on the heavier side.

Remove the one of the two halves of the plastic grey rim in order to replace with an aluminum one; have a machine shop doing that half with smaller outer diameter. Give the machine shop person a drawing showing what would you like.

Once you have the half done, drill 1/16 holes around the hub (see picture I sent before as a reference) in order to bolt on the two rim halves.

You will see the difference.

I would like your feedback about the Revolution engine..

Have a great day..

Progress to date:
Tapped into the RPM sensor for the Eagletree telemetry system, now I won't have to hold a sensor infront of that big carbon fiber propeller.
Install Cylinder Head temperature sensor for Eagletree - to make sure the R50 stays happy.
Configured the battery switches - the new JR 921 2.4Ghz receiver has dual battery inputs. so I installed a redundant battery system ( 2 2400 mah Li-ION battery, 2 JRdelux switchs and 2 MPI 6v regulators)
Install Fataba GY240 Gyro on the rudder - placed sensor on plate for tow release servo
Did an initial ballance - should take about 10oz of lead on the rear of the engine plate to balance the beasty.
Check the scale and it comes in at 32lbs--------------paint is heavy

That looks fantastic marnochs!!! You say weight up front to balance...thats not good cause my tail feathers turned out quite heavy.

Where'd you put all your snow? You hide your snow better than we do

Hi

Nice work, and very nice engine mounting!

Do you have any experince with the Revolution R-50?

What size is the 3 blade prop you are yousing?

Has the engine been running jet?

/regards

Hi Andy,

Thanks.....I copied the engine cooling shroud setup from full sized aircraft engines (Lycoming & Continental). (why reinvent the wheel). This will be my first experience with the Revolution engine. I have a Molki 20ccm engine that looks similar and runs just fine in my Ultra Stick.
The propeller is a Mejzlik 20 x 10 and I haven't run the engine yet. I was waiting til after our AMA convention in California, don't want to have to do too much cleaning before showing it off

Installed the fuel buttons on the underside of the fuse

Got the front windscreen cutout and glued in place. As you can see, I taped up the plastic to try to minimize the extra marks I put in the first one. I used GOOP household adhesive to glue all the windows in.
Last two pic show the landing gear travel ( whopping 1.5 inches ) out of the temporary gas strut shock absorbers.

Finished up on the Electronics integration. Receiver and Flight Recorder boxes are lined with 1/4" foam rubber then held in place with rubber bands. Added a second remote receiver to the AR9000 DSM2 receiver and placed it in the rear of the fuse.
Tail wheel brush guard is 0.070 carbon rod black(rubberized) CA togethered. Plates are glued to the fuselage with GOOP.
My pilot looks a little board - probably tired of all the maintenance............ and the loss of his feet.

Finished up on the landing gear shock absorbers. Found some nylon flanged bushings that were just the right size. Also some 1/2" x 3.75 x 0.054" springs that seam to be about the right strength.
I used 0.625 OD tubing with a wall thickness of 0.035 for the lower leg and 0.375 OD tubing (0.035) for the upper leg. There is about a 2.5" overlay when the leg is fully extended.

I painted my XAOR 20x8 propeller in the standard Hartzell colors. I'm waiting for some Hartzell prop decals from Major Decals to finish it off. Initial maiden flight is scheduled for January 19 at the CVRC Russell Pond facility( big grass field). Will post a video afterwords.

Hi,
I was wondering if you made the little airfoils that go between the wing and flaps. I have been trying to think of a way to make them accurately but so far I have not come up with a good solution.

As usual you are commended on the great job you have done. My Porter is still coming along but have little time to work on it.

Hi Bob,

I haven't installed the flap gap covers yet but I have them fabricated. I was going to see how the Porter flew without them ( full flap stall speed )......I used 3 inch black plastic pipe as a mold form and vacuum baged them to shape( soaked the balsa with water to make it more plyable). I then repeated the process to cover them with 0.75oz glass cloth and epoxy . Just have to make the standoffs to get the spacing correct. Attached is a pic from the full sized Porter, you can see the leading edge of the cover on the full size Porter is not all that thick. I think I used 1/16 sheet balsa for the gap cover, sanded down the back half as you can see from the second photo
