Default Servo requirements

There's too many choices in the world-- I'm going to start a project after Xmas, an L-19. It will be either a 1/5 scale or a 1/4 scale, either an Ikon or a Vaillancourt. In any case, would standard servos (such as Futaba 3001's) be sufficient for 1/4 scale? If not, some recommendations please, and which controls should I go higher torque on? This plane will have dual aileron and dual flap, for either scale, maybe dual elevator servos if I go 1/4 scale. I really would rather stay 1/5 scale to keep cost down (smaller engine, etc) but my buds at the field say I should "biggie size the fries". Plus I already have a 1/5 scale L-4, and it's plenty big for me, both in terms of toting it around, and storing it. Flying doesn't matter in terms of which one. They are also trying to talk me into gas instead of glow, for either size, a G-26 for 1/5 and a G-38 for 1/4, and there's a guy that has a NIB US-41 for $150. Powerful arguments, sure, but breaking a lot of new ground for me. I had thought of a 1.20 for the 1/5 scale, 1.80 for 1/4 scale for glow power (Saito)

Vaillancourt is a known quantity, but Ikon is substantially cheaper, when looking at the total build. I'm going to detail this bird, but don't plan on Scale Masters anytime soon.

Typically speaking you are going to want high torgue on the elevator, rudder and ailerons. Depending on which size you end up with you might want them on your flaps as well. The good news is that you can use the standard servo for the throttle. Good Luck, Dave

I have had a couple of 1/4 Cubs. I used either the OS 91FX or OS120 twin and they had plenty of power for more than scale flight at about 15 pounds. I believe the Saito 150 would haul the 1/4 with very good authority. I had about 75 foot vertical with my engines. I used standard servos for ailerons. From what I have read here 60 inch ounce should be enough for rudder and elevator unless you are going to fly beyond scale flight.
