Not a whole lot of progress to report,
The wings are finished, I went back to the tail surfaces and gave them another sanding and installed the Robart hinges. Someone was very gracious and bent my cabane wires for me on their wire bender I have decided to really detail out the flying wires. I will need to fabricate some attachment points to attach to the cabanes and the wings. Once I have these made I can install the cabanes and sheet the top of the fuse.
My order from Ziroli should be in early in the week. I will be receiving the fiberglass fuse fairing, Robart Landing Gear and aluminum wing tubes. Once I get these items I should be able to finish up the framework.
Later!!

Still waiting for my order to come in,
I have test fit the cabane wires and it looks like they need very little adjustment I have taken a couple pics of all the major components layed out in my basement floor. Not too bad for about a months worth of work from plans

I have the gear installed and the wing tubes cut and test fitted, I took some pics of the Stearman assembled with everything dry fitted. It is starting to look like a Stearman.

CubNut,
I'm getting ready to build a quarter scale Waco, and am curious about what adhesives you are using on your Stearman. I'm planning to use Titebond, except where epoxy is needed.

I used Elmers wood glue, C/A med and thin and Epoxy as needed. The plane is coming out very light and appears to be strong.

That's looking fabulous, Anthony. Excellent job so far.
Any thoughts on what you plan to do for a dummy engine? Williams Brothers is back online, in case you want to go that route with nice looking dummy cylinders. I just ordered a one-fifth scale set of jugs for my Great Planes PT-17 electric conversion two days ago, but have not received an order confirmation yet. The new owner is really scrambling to get ramped up again.

Rick,
I am glad to see they are back in business but I am modeling the Stearman after the full scale one at a local airport and it is equipped with a Continnental radial and Williams Brothers do not manufacture a kit for that, it looks like I will have to scratch build an engine if I want to go into that much detail.

RE: Ziroli 87" Stearman Build
You might want to consider doing what I did for a dummy engine on my 1/8 scale Aerodrome Stearman. There are a few photos of it here in my Member Gallery.
After much studying of photos of P&W and Continental engines, I decided the Pratt & Whitney dummy cylinder looked enough like a Continental cylinder that I used them on my Stearman. What I did was to mount the jugs backwards with the pushrods aft. I actually didn't use the included pushrods, as there wasn't enough room on the crankcase housing I fabricated to secure them at the bottom. I used painted bamboo BBQ skewers instead, to approximate the pushrod tubes. The intake/exhaust stubs are problematic, but can be modified into something reasonable if a little creativity is used. I haven't done that yet on mine, but I will one of these days. The overall look is good enough for sport scale flying.
The look isn't true scale, but with a bit of work, it makes for a passable standoff scale rendition of a Conti 220. I'd much rather have a set of scale Conti 220 jugs too (and I'm going to argue/plead my case to the new owner of WBMP), but the thought of scratchbuilding all those complicated cylinders was too scary for me to consider seriously. My solution is much more convincing than a vacuum-formed engine, and a much better solution than just copping out with a non-scale cowling on a PT-17.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

RE: Ziroli 87" Stearman Build
Got my Williams Brothers Model Products dummy P&W cylinders coming!
I got a call from Dan Brett of WBMP today, to confirm my order. Had a nice talk with him. He told me he has dummy engine cylinders in various sizes in stock right now.
Call or email him and get some if anyone is in need of some cylinders. Don't wait for them to show up at Tower--he says you may be waiting a while if you do that. He's filling individual orders right now.

I have made some progress,
The cabanes are now mounted and the fuse is sheeted, the airframe weighs 10lb 4 oz as it sits.

RE: Ziroli 87" Stearman Build
I hate to say it but I have to set the Stearman to the side
Taxidermy season is here and I have a couple of mounts to do and I am sure more will show up soon. Here are a couple of pics of where I am leaving off. I will try to get some odd and end work done like mounting brackets and so on while I am doing the Taxidermy work. It will probably be Febuary before I get back to finishing the plane.

Cubnut, great looking plane so far - excellent work. I have a request for you, I am building a 89" Flair Stearman, but I am adapting the Robart Ziroli gear to it- mains and tail. What I'd like to ask is do you have any detail pics of the frame area where the hard mounts are for the landing gear? It would be a great help for my project.
I am going to use Stits lite for the covering and I have an ST710 Seidel 7 cyl radial for the powerplant.
These are the pics:
Thanks

The 325 has 3.8 hp so I would think you can fly the 87" fine. Now the Zirolli Stearman is about 30+ lbs (so the specs say) versus the Flair which is about 22-25 lbs. What is the weight of your Stearman?

RE: Ziroli 87" Stearman Build
Well, I'm picking up he plane this weekend. I beleive its in the area of 24 - 27 lbs. When I pick it up I will weigh it. What would you say the maximum weight is for the Saito 325R5 engine to fly nice.

I just aquired a Bob Dively 1/4 scale 96" Stearman. It weighs in the 35 LB. range.Power is a 5.8 C.I. gas eng. swinging a 24-12 prop. Has anyone got experience flying this airplane? It has not been flown yet. How about some knowledgeable advice.

IT'S FEBUARY! I mean hows it coming along? I just started my Ziroli stearman and was wondering if you are using the 4 page text only instructions. Mostly because the second full body stringer from the top does not span between f4 and f2 why? Either that or my eyes are failing in my old age...17.

RE: Ziroli 87" Stearman Build
I just received a set of plans for the 87" Ziroli Stearman. It will be a slow build as I am not an experienced builder. It probably will be a winter 2007 project. I have flown a lot of planes but they were all built by others. I'll watch this thread to help me when I start my build. I will probably order a precut kit from one of the kit cutters and order some of the parts from Ziroli. I should have plenty of power because I have ordered one of the new RC Showcase 150cc radials. I have a Magnum 400 radial that I plan to install on an Aero Works ARF Stearman to fly until I get the 87" built.

RE: Ziroli 87
Well....it has been five years. What was the outcome with this build? What engine did you use? How did it fly? Is it still flying?
I just bought the plans, gear, short kit, etc. from Ziroli. I plan to build the plane and share the experience on this thread.
Cheers,
Keith
