I recently acquired a model called "Nuttin Special". My information is that it was put out by Modeltech some 10+ years ago. It is a beautiful airplane reminiscent of a 30's racer. I am wondering if anyone remembers this model, and knows if it was modeled after a full scale - if so - what full scale airplane?

Thanks for the info Dick. Flew it again this morning, in spite of huricane Wilma. I've been flying less than a year so I take it up and go around in circles at half throttle with an occaisional figure '8' or a lazy loop. Then I give it to my 'test pilot', with 30 yrs of experience; he throws the hi rate switch and it's off to the races with snap rolls, knife edges, inverted high speed fly-bys at 10 ft and finishes by hanging it on the prop for 20 seconds. When he's done, I'm exhausted. It is really a great flying airplane.

Hello there, just thought you might be intrested in knowing a little bit more about the Nuttin' Special. The aircraft was designed by a gentleman by the name of Chuck Smith sometime in the mid 1980's, about the same time he took on the daring challenge of teaching me to fly!! That's right, in fact Chuck is still the preferred instructor at the Checkerboard Model Aircraft Club located in Maywood, Illinois about 20 miles west of Chicago. Anyway this aircraft was a very elegant design on the ground and slightly ahead of it's time in the air. Chuck would do stuff with the Nuttin that you would not know whether to be jealous or confused. My fondest memories of it was when he would bring it out on a calm summer evening and take off at one-third throttle into that inviting midwestern sunset, BEAUTIFUL!! Then of course he fly the heck out of it. The engine he used I know for sure was an Enya but can not say if it was a 120 or a 150, but whatever it was it was a perfect match. Chuck even downscaled the Nuttin' to about a 45 inch span version which he called the "little gem." As far as its production, if my memory serves me right it was offered as a ARC by Model Tech and was available through INDY hobbies which I think went out of business several years ago. Anyway, I am sure you will enjoy thls nostalgic airplane and hope you are coping well with the damage and problems that Hurricane Wilma has caused.

Thank you for the background. It gives my Nuttin' a life and some character. This particular model had it's 10th birthday this month, as it was built in Oct '95. It had been hangared for about 5 years when I acquired it last month. It is powered with a YS 120 and the combination seems to be perfect. I attempted to upload a photo. If the upload was successful, pass it on to Chuck.

The Nuttin'Special kit has made its way down to New Zeland where I live. In fact I recently "aquired" a slightly battered but almost complete ARC kit, rescued from a trip to the dump after a shop closed! It looks real nice and reading the forum they seem to fly well so its this kit's lucky day as I intend to finish it off. However there are a couple of problems. While the fus, wings, tail bits are all there and in good order, there appear to be some bits missing from the kit - most importantly the instructions/plans. There are a few photocopied sheets which seem to cover most things but it would be helpful if I could get access to some plans or at least be able to ask someone for clarification where needed.
One area that needs clarification is the undercaridge which is missing entirely. Dimensions etc to help make up new pieces would be helpful. Also was the kit supposed to come with the bits to build up the tank box and engine mounts? If so they are missing also.
What engines are recommended? I see someone had a YS120 which they liked. Is a 60 2C sufficient?
