Default Saving RC Universe threads for future reference

Hi - this is not an RC Scale item - it's about saving RC Universe threads of interest for future reference. I made up Folders in the Rules section of Outlook Express and Moved the Incoming Mail from RCU to the RCU Folder. This works fine and I can refer to the articles with a few simple clicks. BUT - today I tried to look at one from 2002 - and the page was no longer available. I tried several others from that era out of interest and they were unavailable too. It wasn't until about 2003 - 4 that the threads were available.
So my question is this - is there a better way ? Please advise how to do and with what ? Many thanks. MalcolmL

Hi - I forgot to mention, most of the articles I choose to Save are from the RC Scale threads - that's why I posted my question here. Thanks. MalcolmL

I guess RCU has only so much storage space. Ones that I want to save I simply pu them on a CD for futurre use. Don't forget to put a notation as to what is on CD and starting date.

How do you go about saving an entire thread? I'd certainly like to do that with some of my favorites but how can it be done?

Is there some way to print an entire (multi-page) thread all at once? If so it would be possible to "Print as a PDF" at least on a Mac and then file away the .pdf file.

Other than right clicking and saving the page to your HD in an appropriate folder there doesn't seem to be a way to save a thread. Right clicking requires that each page be saved individually. You can rename them before saving. Thumbnails are saved, but the larger pics they reference are left behind.

The RC Scale site has a useful option. You can click on a choice to format the thread for printing. Then when you save the page the entire thread is there, no matter how many pages it covers.

Maybe RCU could introduce this option.

There are also site saving programs like Teleport.

This is what I have done since the late 90's: I block copy the main thread body to avoid having to down load website headers and all of the junk on the bottom of the screen. Paste it all into a word document. You do get all of that extra personal stuff that guys put in... their pet picture and sayings, etc.do

On shorter threads I strip out all of the extra stuff by:
1. Edit, Select All, .........click on Table, Convert, Convert Text to Table, then..........Convert Table to Text.,
Then while the whole file is still highlighted (Selected) Normalize the font, click on TImes New Roman, and 12 pitch.

This still leaves me with guy's picutres and "sayings" which I have to invidually block copy and hand delete.

Its work, but I have lots of info saved over the years. As far as pictures I have to click on each one while on the NET and the separately copy the enlargement down to it's place on my WORD document.

I give each word document a name that I can sort on later such as any thing having to do with paint, I start with PAINT, with LIPO safety, I start with LIPO Safety, with flying the "Waterfall" I start wtih Waterfall, with the Hanagar 9 Showtime I start with ...well you get the idea.

I have separate folders such as Radio Topics, Engines, Specific AIrcraft, Aerobatic Maneuvers, on and on.

The monster strings on speicifc aircraft are hard to keep up with ........it can get to be 200 pages, etc.

Thanks for all your helpful responses. The one from GarySS seems to be intensive but if it works OK ........ why not ...... what else is there to do besides design / build / fly / crash / repair !!!???

I wonder what RC Universe has to offer on the subject ?

If there'a a moderator reading this thread, perhaps we could have some input ........ thanks. MalcolmL

Hi GarySS - I have another query on your thread. When you say 'word document' - do you mean 'My Documents' as in XP - and not 'My Pictures'. I ask because there are words and pictures in so many threads. Does it matter ? MalcolmL

I've been doing that since the early FIDO and RIME days, only I do kinda like the KISS Principle, so I just FWD the post of interest to myself. When it tumbles in the e-mail door, I save it to the appropriate folder under "D:\Models" on the secondary drive (always have a second bootable HDD, right ?).

When I get a roundtuit, I may or may not clean the e-mails up, but mostly not. Generally I only need a reminder of what the post had to say, and then it's off to the building shed to ruin another batch of unsuspecting rough-cut balsa.

The Ziroli B-25 build thread is a good example, but not all posts were True Nuggets, so I'd say I only stashed about 70-odd percent of the original thread.

And my Ziroli B-25 >>IS STILL<< NIB.

Hi MalcomL, I don't use "My Documents" as the concept just didn't catch on with me at work or at home. I use Windows Explorer to create and manage folders and files as an indexing system. I do use "My Pictures" to sort jpgs of internet downloads and from my own digital camera. Just use the master organization plan of your choice.

Lately I downloaded the Fliton Extra 330 string (page after page) and then later while off line just used my computer's yellow highlighter function to mark any useful information (engine and servo choices, problems, and pertinent opinions. Then I cut and pasted this into a fresh document and deleted the rest. Much quicker than what I was originally doing.

One hint: If you like a certain string, go up to the top address bar and block copy that whole address down into the top of your document.

Didn't RC Universe have a big problem in about 2002 and everyone had to re-register, etc. with previous postings all lost?
Have fun. GarySS

Hi Gary - thanks again for your very useful input - all noted and under serious consideration.
I'm a little surprised an RCU moderator hasn't been on with any helpful comments.
And you're right - now you mention it, I also seem to remember there was a problem with RCU and re-registration - maybe that's why I don't have threads from that time ...... ?
Best MalcolmL
