RE: Best scale photo!
Well Tom, as thread "starter", I personaly invite\request you to post some photo shop edited photos of that SBD. As I said before, it doesn't bother me if a photo is edited... as long as it makes me "think".
As for anyone that takes offense to an edited photo? Loosen up! Lets just enjoy the pics and stick to the thread "guide lines". This is after all, about making our models look REAL.

As for Toms SBD being a hangar queen? I think Tom built the Dauntless with every intention of "break'n her cherry", the time just has to be right... weather and pilot comfort.
Wish I could be there to see her.
Wish I could be there to see her.
Don't forget this is my first scale plane, and I've never flown a warbird before. So, some of you will have to excuse me if I'm not rushing right out and throwing 2000 hours of work and over $3000 investment up in the air just to satisfy those who don't think I ever will. I've gotta get my ducks in a row and make sure I'm ready to fly it. Then and only then will it be in the air.

RE: Best scale photo!
Hey guys don't get bent out of shape, I wasn't trying to bash NEO personally for his plane not flying yet. But I somebody said my "flying photos" didn't belong here. I had read "the rules".
I have some other photos I'll post later but, to me, this is realism, isn't that the intent? There are some more pics over at the cropduster R/C thread but they are lacking the current level of detailing/weathering.
I worked for the fellow that flew the full-size for 12 yrs and this is how I saw the plane most of the time. As a matter of fact he was present when these photos were taken and it brought tears to his eyes. He commented "You've got me daydreaming - lots of bittersweet memories". He had logged 3600+ hrs in that one airplane in 18yrs. He had seen my model before but I hadn't had a chance to fly it for him until last week. He sold his spray planes a retired from "dusting" in 1992 @ 70+ years old. I have a photo of him with my plane but I know that sure doesn't belong on this thread.
Sorry for the ruffled feathers, tends to happen when browsing/posting at 2AM.
BTW-I tend to fire back when folks say our models aren't "real planes" too.

RE: Best scale photo!
David,
No worries mate. I wasn't trying to say that your pics didn't belong here, they certainly do. I tend to fire back as well when I think someone is going after me. Your comment about "no hangar" queens, and "no Photoshop" just looked way too much like a direct shot at my SBD pics. After all, I'm the one with the PS pics and the one who hasn't flown his yet... what else should I think? It's a sore subject for me anyway because a number of people both on and off the forums have called my plane a hangar queen and claim I'll never fly it. It just pi**es me off, because I know I will. I think it's just jealousy when I hear it. If that wasn't your intent, then enough said.
As for your story about the fullscale Thrush, the Pilot, etc... that's awesome! I love to hear about that stuff. That alone makes your plane even more interesting to me than it already was. When I flew across the country to meet the pilot of my SBD, his reactions were much the same as your pilot's were. That's what it's all about for me. I'd love to see the pics of the pilot with your plane, whether in this thread or otherwise. I'm sure nobody's going to mind if you post it here "along with" or as a "follow up to" your "Scale Pics". It just adds interest to the entire phenomena that is "replication of reality" as one might call it.
It's just the standard "Oh here's me standing next to my XYZ plane sitting here on my workbench" with no associated "Scale Pics" to go with it, that don't belong here (IMHO). Hopefully Mustang feels the same way. Actually, I really like it when someone makes a cool "scale pic" that is unbelievably realistic, then adds a standard "model pose" to show that it really is a model after all. Makes it all the more impressive... especially when you're wondering if it IS in fact a model!
I truly believe that the most difficult thing to do is to take such a "scale pic" without doing any PS work to it. You can take hundreds of shots and never really get that right pic. It takes a lot of practice, planning, the correct conditions & environment, and a whole lot of luck. Hopefully I'll get some opportunities this summer to go through a lot of shooting and maybe nail one or two that way. But, in the mean time, it's the PS versions just to have some fun while I wait for this lousy weather to change. [:'(]

Okay on this edge of the world - let's get back to the pictures.

That's obviously taken on the Carrier elevator on its way up to the flight deck. The background is black because it is between the hangar and the deck. It's about dawn and the sun is just comming up. Gonna be a good day for bustin' flattops!

I especially like the third one. You could make a grainy black & white of that, and I'd believe you got it from an old Time magazine or the National Archives.

Hehe Dang! Ya beat me to it! I just made one and went to upload it, but yours was already there! KEWL... nice job!
Paul, the black background in the first pic is the inside of a fullscale plane hangar. The sun was going down, and no light was getting in there... especially with the exposure settings of my camera. Looks kinda cool though.

Oh well, I'll throw it up anyway. I have many pics of the SBD from the naval archives, and most of those ol' B&W photos were pretty low quality. They looked a little more like this version. I add a lot more contrast, grain texture, some camera optic blowout, and fewer grayscale levels.

Yeah, Photoshop is addictive. I make my living on it all day long as a graphic designer. I also do Photoshop, Illustrator, GoLive and Flash training to employees at work. Ain't the computer an amazing thing?

In as much no one likes art and an "artistic interpretation" as much as I , these photos do not fit the "heart " of this thread.
We are trying to make these photos of our models look like photos of the actual full scale airplanes.
Lets try to stick with this idea.

Awesome stuff Chris, as always.
As I have said before, the backdrop at SCCMAS offers some of the neatest images. The angle of the hills in the background sometimes fool you into thinking that your actually looking down at the plane from above and the distant hill are actually level ground below. Again, Nice work!
