Thanks Bob, there are many Tripes on that site, unfortunatly most are of the same color scheme, "Black Death" squadron. I was hoping for something different. Has anyone seen one in Itialian colors? French, etc?

N500 was the prototype tripe. The tail plane was shaped like the Pup's - the stab tips were the same shape as the wing tips. On the later production models, the stab tips were tapered the other way like what you see in the Black squadron. This shape on the tail plane afforded better manurverablility. (I reckon that is why the stab of Phil Kraft's Ugly Stick is also shaped that way!) Any how - I think that would be a great choice for a color scheme. Cover it in antique Solartex and watch it glow when it flies through the sun.....that would make an absolutely gorgeous picture!

I was working a bit this evening on making the wing cabane mounts. They are little different than the full scale but I am happier with these for my plane for strength. They will be 1/6th ply and be on both sides of the cabanes. Here is a picture that I did using DesignCAD and the full scale version. Mine will be in the same shape as a rib so will fit into the wing without the need to glue them to existing ribs.

a couple of updates. I finished the wing cabane mounts, here are a few pictures. I also fit the bent wing tube into the fuse. I am not expecting complete support from the tube, just some stability to add to that of the cabanes. The wing wires will mount to the bolts that go through the cabanes at the mounts. I know this is not scale, but I like the way it works out for me and it looks pretty good. Remember, this is a "Fun Scale" project.

I will have a Balsa USA 1/3 scale wheel kit here sometime this week. I wanted the spoked wheels for this one.

A question on servos. What to use? Will a standard size high torque servo work (in the 72-100 oz range)? What are your thoughts?

I recieved my Balsa USA 1/3rd scale wheel kit yesterday. I must say it looks better sitting on larger tyres. Hmm, no responses to any of the questions I have asked. I am guessin that there is little interest in the thread. Maybe I will revive it when I have the maiden flight pictures, or crash pictures whichever come first

Prop, Buy the servos and we'll tell you later what size you needed! I'm not sure what other questions you have, as I skimmed to this point. However, I think it all looks great and I like your idea for mounting the struts in the wings. I would comment to throu-bolt the brackets to the struts, which I'm sure you were going to do anyway!

As far as a paint job, why are you ruling out "Black Flight"? My guess is, this is one scheme that there is documentation for. If this really just don't work for you, howsabout a captured "Tripe", in German markings?

Prop I think that 100oz servos would be fine. Your plane isn't going to be flying at 100mph!

You can also try using this calculator for your servo's. I've been told that it's useful..

Hmm, an update would be in order about now. Lets see, I got the motor for the plane the other day, its an 1100cc Honda......it will be a real job converting this one! Kind of hard to get motivated to work on the plane with a new bike sitting in the same shop :P (thanks to my wonderful wife for letting me get a new toy, aint she a doll?)

well propnut i have a 1/3 busa pup and i have those servos on it and they work fine. planning on using the same on the camel
just got mine in the mail they are GWS servos. i am using 4 of them and one standard servo for throttle. they are even thin enough to put inside the wing on thier side

Can you beleive it?! April 11 and we get a snow storm with 9inches of snow?!!!

I did think about adding the tripe wings to the Honda but the wing loading wouldnt allow me to do scale loops, rolls or wheelies

I thought it snowed in Michigan until Memorial Day.

A freind of mine moved to Dearborn over 10 years ago. His first winter he kept hitting his driveway with a shovel. It didn't take him long to notice all of his neighbors had blowers. He realized he was in a new land, and he better take care of his back!

Your Tripe is looking great. Keep up the good work. There sure are a lot of WWI projects going on here. What a feast![sm=thumbs_up.gif]

I attended a 'scale society' meeting last week & what should be there? A 1/3 scale Sopwith Triplane! This one has an 80cc gas engine & folds aft of the cockpit to fit in a van, the servos are munted just aft of the cockpit. The builder used a trimmed down B USA cowl from the pup. - John.

Congrats on your new toy! I hope you still can find time to continue working on the Tripehound. I was looking at various color schemes but didn't find any that were super exciting, but knowing your penchant for blue, I did notice a Sopwith Triplane with blue cowling and metal panels and blue wheel covers. Just for your info..

On a side note, I ran the 40cc Briggs IN the DVII yesterday. Nothing fell off or shook loose and I had good range and no glitches with the engine running. Also,perhaps because the fuselage is a little more streamlined than my test stand, I picked a 100 RPM. Now I just have to take a big swig of courage and fly the thing!

Mark, I used an ASP .80 and an ASP 1.20 on my Dynaflite SE5a, the .80 flies scale the 1.20 flys it like a rocket on rails.

J, Great to hear from you! I really look forward to those flight pictures (and video) of your DVII, you will love it.

The owner is not a 'computer' sort of guy so no pics posted but I'll take some pics next time I see the model. Are you after just general pics or some detail pics to solve a problem?

Apparently the tripe is a good flyer, he had a 'small' version (1/4 scale!) & this flew well until he flew low in front of some trees and the camoflage did it's job a little too well. - John.

Ohhh [:@] I almost did that with my Aeronca Grasshopper 1/4 scale! I didnt see it on approch until it had touched down! Amazing that I didnt bash it in.

I am very curious as to how he set the incidence on the wings, if you get a chance to ask him.

I havent posted anything in some time as I havent done anything in some time. My wife is finished with Chemo and the final surgery went very well. As soon as I am caught up with my real work (and summer classes at the college) I will get back to the Tripe. I did tinker with the wings, I have them pretty much ready to cover with the exception of the top wing needing the ailerons cut out and hinged. I purchased a used G62 from another RCU member recently and will be using that instead of the Quadra 52 (I wanted to swing a larger prop for scale looks). I will get some pictures posted in the next couple of weeks. Del, if you see this, I doubt that I will have her ready to dogfight with you in September...maybe at Hoosiers though.

I did pick up a new trailer to haul the 1/3rd scale though. My old Pop-Up didnt have the hieght that I would need.
