Default P-51's

Which type of P-51 did the Tuskeegee airmen fly? I saw an ad in RCM about these guys who built a P-51B to bring around the U.S. and teach kids. But in the movie about them, starring Lawrence Fishbourne and Cuba Gooding Jr., they flew P-51D;s. Was this just because of the availability of the D model?

kylenlord,
they flew both as well as p-47s. They were given airplanes as the white pilots were done with them. There are a couple of books with their markings? are you building one?

No, I might though. I am considering the purchase of a Nosen P-51, and thought I would like one of those color schemes. The movie was on the History Channel recently, and I thought I would ask on RCU. I didn't know that they had P-47 also, were they also painted with the Red tails, and noses?

They started out in P-40s. I don't think the P-40s or P-47s carried the red tails but I could be wrong on this. Regards, Chad.

I don't think the P-40's or 47's had the red tail either. I am working on a top flight P-51 i've been working on the past couple of years. THe book with the P-51 markings is called "Mustang aces of the ??? and the RAF". Help me here I'll try and find it

Hello Kylenlord,

If you want information on the markings on Tuskegee Airmen P-51's check www.ebonywings.com. This is a site dedicated to the Tuskegee Airmen. It gives info on plane markings (including which group used them!!),victories, campaign use, etc..

Hi
I would call the Chino, Ca. "Planes of fame" museum and ask for the Tuskeegee web site. I have met four of the these Pilots at Chino. They were kind enough to sign my smithsonian poster.

THE TUSKEEGEE'S ALSO FLEW AT-6 TEXANS TO START. THEIR "HALL OF FAME" IF YOU WILL IS IN WHERE ELSE, TUSKEEGEE ALA. YOU CAN GIVE THE ALABAMA CHAMBER OF COMMERSE A CALL AND THEY WILL SEND YOU IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. I MET NIGHTTRAIN AT THE DANVILLE VA. AIRSHOW LAST YEAR. HE GAVE A FIFTEEN MINUTE SPEECH OVER THE PA THAT HAD EVERYONE STOPPED IN THEIR TRACKS TO LISTEN. IT WAS UNBELIEVABLE. HE MADE MENTION TO THE MOVIE AND WAS A LITTLE UPSET THAT HOLLYWOOD HAD HIM KILLED. HOPE THIS HELPS.
