RE: AMR 33% Waco YMF-5 Build
TR,
Interesting comment. Its hard to believe we're talking about the same wheels. I'm not sure what kind of surface you're flying from, but after almost a dozen flights the wheels look brand new. I'm sure if an abrupt turn really loads them it is certainly possible to peel them off the rim. The idea of tearing off the landing gear is a major disaster of a landing. The gear is hell for stout.
On the other hand, I firmly believe in listerning to experience. Just because it has'nt happened to me, doesn't mean it can't. I do have a set of AMR wheels. I thought they were too large for the size of the pants and they weigh twice as much.
Thanks for the input

Here is a couple pics of the nav lights, well one wing tip and the tail light. I hade them taped to balsa sticks for painting and drying but one of them fell off and ruined the finish and it needs sanded down and repainted[:@].

For the tail light I drilled a hole to accept a 9/32" aluminum tube, the ligh will have a 1/4" tube in the bottom which is a slip fit for the 9/32. It will take a little bit of ingenuity to run the wires for the tail light.
Here are a couple pics of the tail light in position. I used pics from John to scale the lights.

Thanks Guys,
I am very happy with them especially considering they are made of wood. I was going to try and make them out of aluminum but took the easy way out. Now if I can get the lenses I will be in business.

We are getting snow here, 5" over night and another 5" plus expected tonight with freezing rain[:@]
I left work early and I am taking the day off tomorrow and I will stay in where it is warm and work on the Waco. I picked up some foam and I may start building the cuffs for the wheel pants. I will wait until tomorrow and see what catches my eye to work on.
Later!

Anthony,
You're welcome!! All that weather was here two days ago.
I am repainting my wheel pants and this would be a good time to add covers. I'm very interested in the process.

Anthony, it is 31 degrees here right now and we have freezing rain as I speak. It is supposed to get worse for the next 24 hours. Got a nice fire going in the den.
Got all of the tail feathers covered with the exception of the vertical stab. Wings and ailerons are also covered and doped. My shop should be warm by now so I'll catch you later.

Is it possible to have the Pica plans enlarged to get a 25%model out of it? Looks like 25% is going to be what I want to build... I am just trying to figure out the best way to go. I know Barth has a 25% but I would rather get some prints and cut my own.... I can't spend 1000 bucks right now.
Thanks,

I would be careful enlargeing the plans, you will have to adjust stick and sheeting sizes accordingly and it is a pain in the butt. I started to do this before building from the Pepino plans and to be honest I don't know which one would be worse.
You will spend at least $1k building a 25% from plans, trust me I know. I spent more than that on my Pepino. Building from plans will nickel and dime you to death and you are constantly making trips to the H/S. On the other hand building from plans is very challengeing and rewarding when you have completed the plane.

RE: AMR 33% Waco YMF-5 Build
Hi Guys,
I need a little advice here, I am looking at making the cuffs for the wheel pants. Due to the shape of the cuff it will have to be split to remove it from the landing gear with the axle installed. The compund curve on the pant also poses a problem with laying up the foam to build up the cuff. I am thinking about building up the cuff with mostly foam and getting the shaped as best I can and using some drywall compund to fill in any small areas. I think I will be able to remove the pant from the gear after I have the cuff formed up on the landing gear then glass the cuff while it is on the gear then split the cuff after it has cured then carefully remove each half by disolving as much of the foam as possible while it is still on the gear and then fully clean each half after it is removed. I have very litttle experience with laying up glass parts. Will fiberglass resin attack the foam? If so what should I use?
This will be alot of work and I want to make sure I get it right the 1st time.

Anthony,
Splitting the cuff is just what they do on the full size (see pictures of the YKS cuff). I have used epoxy resin when fiberglassing over foam so if you are using polyester type resin, I can't answer for sure.

John,
I was going to split the cuff fully but I may try just splitting the back half like the full scale. I just spent a half hour getting into my truck and the wifes car. My truck was covered with a 1/2" of ice and was a total PITA to get the door open. I had to use a rubber mallot to break the ice away, my wife's car was still covered in snow from the day before and the ice just layered on top of the snow so no big deal to clean. I need to build a garage
I will start on the cuffs in a little while and I will post some pics as I go.

Anthony,
I understand, it took me about a half hour to clean the Durango at work so I could go home last night. They called me in early yesterday and I now have to do my driveway from yesterday and over night and then head to work. At home I have a carport so it is not as bad but the snow did get blown on to the Durango.
You could always carve your cuffs in styro, remove them and then glass them. Maybe make a female mold to lay up extras if need be. That way you could have a nice smooth outter surface with out a lot of work on the replacements. More work up front but better results later.

John,
It will be very difficult to remove the plgg from the gear to unless I split the plug. I will take a look at that. I could try to make a female glass plug, more work but I know several guys would be looking for cuffs in the future and it would help everyone.
I have a 300ft driveway that I refuse to shovel, I just drove my 4x4 truck up and down the driveway a dozen time to clear a path for the wifes car. I am sick of the white death[:@]

Hey Anthony
Don't know is this will help but this link shows how this is done for a skirt or fairing for a tail wheel. Same principle applies. Hope it helps a little
