RE: AMR 33% Waco YMF-5 Build
Thanks Tom,
I used Gary's tapes on my Pepino Waco and they turned out great. I will most likely go with Gary's as I am very familiar with how best to apply them and I am comfortable with working with them.
I have visited Don's thread often on his little Waco He is doing a great job with it. This 25% next to my 33% makes it look like a little sport model. I am going to find it hard if not impossible to go back to building anything smaller than 1/4 scale even on WWII Warbirds. My Xiroli P-40 now looks small to me.
When I get me a trailer(and will be a must) I will get Gary to makes some graphics for it for sure.
Later!!

RE: AMR 33% Waco YMF-5 Build
I have refrained from putting airplane graphics on my trailer because I felt like it was an advertisement for crooks to break in. This happened to a friend of mine while he was on a flyin trip. He was convinced that a blank trailer might have prevented his theft. Most trailers at big bird flyins are blank, at least here in Texas.

Maybe I will put a graphic of a big Rottweiller on the side saying beware of the pooch living inside
I will put an alarm system in my trailer when I get one. Nothing worse than a thief. You can make one up pretty easy with parts from Radio Shack.

I don't have the measurement in inches....sorry. I figured it by calculations. The fellow that first helped me balance it had rope and pulley system at which time I set it to 33% and found the CG too rearward. Dany figured for 40%!!!! I can't lift the damn thing for an inch measurement now although the plane still weighs 54.5 lbs....wink wink. Mitch WB100

The answer is "Yes" to both quiestions.
Yes, scale models should have the same relative CG as full size aircraft and,
Yes, you should tweek the CG based on actual flight performane.

RE: AMR 33% Waco YMF-5 Build
Well after saying I could not let go of that kind of money the instrument panel for my 33% AMR arrived today. I cannot say enough about the workmanship. This thing is a work of art. I got it from Gotz Vogelsang owner of Vogelsang Aeroscale out of Chapel Hill NC. It is the panel from Wolfgang Noll of Noll-Modelltechnik in Germany. Gotz is the North American distributor for Wolfgang. Apparently when I ordered the panel from Wolfgang and he found out I was in the US he got in touch with Gotz to supply the panel. Gotz also told me that he will have varios scale pilots available in September. You can check out his web site at www.vogelsang-aeroscale.com. He said that he would not put the pilots on the web site until he has them in hand. So check it out next month if you are looking for a pilot figure. This guy is great to work with. I'm really impressed. He sent an e-mail to verify that the panel arrived OK. The picture dose not do it justice
I posted this on the big thread alos in case someone might be interested in the pilot figures

Now for the continuing story of the wheel cuffs. After curing for three days I sanded the molds with 400 grit and then 600 grit wet. After that I made some dams from poster board to separate the top half of the mold from the bottom. I laid down masking tape on the separation line and then glued the dams to the masking tape with Loctite silicon glue.

Next I sprayed on 4 coats of PVA parting agent. Let that dry for about 2 hours. Then I put on a heavy coat of resin. Let that cure for a few minutes and laid on a piece of 3/4 oz. cloth. After that cured I laid down a piece of 3 oz cloth to add some thickness.

After that cured for about 30 minutes I then applied a heavy coat of Kitty Hair to stiffen the whole piece. This will be allowed to cure overnight. Tomorrow I will remove the poster board dams. If everything goes OK on that I will then spray PVA on the top half and repeat the procedure. Hopefully by Saturday morning I will be able to separate the two half from the mold and each other. Then a little dressing up and I should be good to go on laying up the first set of cuffs

Well I got the felmale molds made and I must say I'm pleased with the results. Couldn't believe that it would come out so shinny and smooth. Really surprised this being my first time. Here is a picture of one of the finished molds

These still have to be cleaned up and joined. However I was not as pleased with the result as I would like so I'm going to try again. When laying these up I put down a heave coat of resin on the molds and after that cured I laid down some 3/4 oz cloth. Let that cure and then 2 layer of 3 oz cloth. I think I should have gone with 3. I will try that on the next set and see if I like the results better. I'm definitly learning this process. I didn't expect to get it all right the first time. I'm surprise I have as much right as I do. Other progress on the WACO I put the Front Fuselage cover on this weekend also. I will be removable. I can't wait to take out those 52 screws

Lonnie the cuffs look great, you look like an old pro at it
I mounted my fiberglass hood in the same manner, I am going to remove some material at the aft cockpit. If you look you will see some material from the boxt structure top just under the instrument panel and to the right and left side of the cockpit. I am going to carefully remove this material to help give the cockpit a more finished look once completed.
I have nothing to report Waco wise at this end. I went back to work Thursday and I have been working partial days since. I get up and get some house work done for the wife and take care of the animals then go to work and come home and do it all over again plus managed to get all the yard work done. The wife is healing up well and she will get her stitches removed Wed. which will help alot.
Later!!

RE: AMR 33% Waco YMF-5 Build
Hey Anthony
Thanks for the comments. But I think I can do better. That is the first time I have tried this and there are some mistakes I need to take care of in the next layup. Hopefully I won't have to do this more that twice to get it right.
I'm studying on removing some of that box too. Just don't want to remove to much and sacrifice strength.
Glad to hear you wife is doing good. I'm sure that everything will be fine now. Caught it early.

Lonnie,
I think we can safely remove material over to the tri-stock reinforceing the joint alot the fuse top. I am sure removeing the material to the instrument panel will not hurt a thing.
Good Luck with your next layup.

RE: AMR 33% Waco YMF-5 Build
I am finally finding some time to work on the Waco again,
The wife has healed up well from the surgery and is up and about and helping with the house chores My building time will be short lived as she will start Chemo treatments this week and I am sure it is going to take the wind out of her sails.
I removed the tail fairings after glassing the outside of the joint with 3oz cloth. I feathered the cloth into the fairing and added a layer of 3/4 cloth to the inside of the joint and this is drying now. I also brushed another coat of resin over the outside where I feathered the edges to help smooth the transition. I have the fuse outside while I am doing this work and I am going to assemble the plane together and see how it is looking. I may bring my 25% out for a photo shoot with it's BIG brother.

Sure good news about your wife Anthony.
Glad to hear your progress on the Waco. I'll be taking the 1/4 scale Waco along with the big Decathlon down to Bomber Field in about 10 days. For those of you who have never been to BF it is a wonderful experience. Great hospitility and lots of fun. The owner, BB Weber, goes out of the way to show everyone a good time. Mack Hodges will be there with his huge B-29 and rocket powered X-1. I believe that the IMAA Rally of Giants will be there next year.

I have the Waco's assembled outside, the size of this bird still impresses me every time I look at it. The tail fairing work came out nice and I can easliy flex it open to remove it from the fuse. Here are a few pics to show the difference in the size of these planes, and I used to think the 25% was big
