RE: building the Proctor Nieuport N28
Mike and TFF,
thx for the help on the Al Powder.
the Proctor kit has an open structure..............as far as i know from all the info that is available though, the tail surfaces were would covered.
i've seen some builders use 1/64 ply. it looks good too.
i'll have to see how mine balances before doing the lam.

hi Dai,
yes it is from the restoration on this site,
http://www.nasm.si.edu/museum/garber...t/nieuport.htm
haven't looked for a while, but i don't think it has been updated.
some good detail photos there.

I saw the plane on display a couple of years ago. It is hanging up at the U/H and you can get close to the nose but you cant get around it. The planes I want to look at close are always hanging[]. I wish they still did there restoration books when they restored a plane. I wonder if you can request copies of pictures they made during restorations.

the fuselage is my favorite part of building this airplane and as complex as it first looks, it literally falls together. every pre-cut part fits, and i think anyone who builds this plane will find that to be pretty amazing consider Joe cuts these kits himself.
the fuse is built by building the top and lower frames first, and then adding the side pieces between. the top frame stays flat to the board. builds up with no undue twist or off centering that you sometimes see when pulling to side frames together.
my stain work that you see was intended for the cockpit area only but i gave the longerons a stain job too. gives it some nice contrast while showing it to my friends who are interested in the 28.

here is where i'm at, and should have the front formers and longerons added by end of day (off today) that form the fuselage to it's round shape, and make up the 4 removeable hatches.

nothing like a day off to get some building done i say
front end of fuse is shaping out and ready for some shaping of the hatch support longerons that make up the 4 removeable hatches.

thx Bob.....
one thing i will point out is the diagonal wires that are installed.
i've seen where some have left them out and that was my intention as well for wieght savings.
without them the structure will twist quite easy, with them installed the fuse is like trying to twist a 4x4.
and again i used .040" diameter CF rod which adds virtually no wieght.

wish i had seen these suggestions beforehand.....that CF rod adds $$$ up.
got the fuse almost completed, the longerons have been sanded to conform to the round shape ready for the 1/32" ply skins.

the 1/32" skins are cut pretty close to size in this kit.
bending presents no problem and attached using masking tape and 30 minute epoxy does a great job as is outlined in the manual.
i preshape my skins when doing projects like this.
i wet the skin, but i don't use water as we all know what how water will expand the wood and plywood can sometimes be damaged with water.
i use Denatured Alcohol spray from a spray bottle, and then use my heat gun while forming the piece to it's shape. dries fast and retains the curve which makes the application a snap. almost don't even need the tape.

when dry and trimmed, the 4 hatches look like this.
the way Proctor did this still amazes me. you'd have to use a grinder with 16 grit pad to mess things up.
as it is, you can see the 4 hatches are hardly noticeable
