What was your first scale project and how did it go?
I'm looking at what to buy for my first scale project (no ARTF's for me, thanks) and am trying to get a feel for the pitfalls to be encountered. So, any reminiscnces that I could learn from from anybody?
Cheers

1/8th scale Jodel D9
Beautiful job, if I do say so myself, I wish I had pictures.
Unfortunately she was way too heavy and I was way too confident. She was killed in a crosswind as she rounded the bay while taking off a frozen lake on her maiden flight.

My first was a Pica T-28 1/6th scale(or there about). June of 1987.
It don't seem that it was really 16 years ago!
It was easy to build, except for this huge balsa block that was behind the cockpit that had to be carved
and sanded. It was easy to fly, not cub easy but it was'nt a rocket either. Dumb thumb crash killed it in june of the following year.

My Feedback: (7)
Mine was a Top Flite P-51 that I did in 1973. Had flaps Goldberg retracts and a K&B .61. Flew great and I got many flights out of that airplane. Actually my first would have been my first RC airplane a Goldberg Cessna 182 that I built in 1971. My first radio was a Hobby Shack Cirrus 6 channel that was World Engines Blue Max that they built for Hobby Shack. I can't count the scale airplanes I have built since then but most of my airplanes have been scale. I was the same way when I built FF airplanes when I was a kid. It always had to look like the real thing. Don

My first one was the royal corsair back in the mid 70's. One thing if its your first scale project pic a plane thats easy to build and builds quick. then when you have the building done quickly you can take your time on the scale goodies. What I see a lot of new scalers out there doing is working on a plane that takes them a long time to frame up and by the time they get to decking her out they tired of the project already and rush their detailing. So find something quick. If you have the money and can afford it find ya a set of plans from someone like ziroli vailley etc and get a glass fuse that way the main part is built just whip out a wing and tailfeathers then start detailing.

My first one was a Berkeley J 3 cub, single channel, rudder only, with a Babcock compound escapement. I started it in 1957 and it taught me how to fly RC in 1958.
It was powered by a O&R .23, and it was controlled by a hard tube CW radio with a sensitive relay.
