I'm sure it would be fine once the engine is well broken in

Ok,but alot of us have New engines and a engines life should Start with the best to keep it going for a long time,,,in auto racing they use a "Break in oil " at first,I realise that is a different application than our models , but I would think First start up is the most critical ,so I guess what I am asking is what to start out with and should we stick to that exclusivly? or change to something else for some reason.
I ask because I have Amsoil "Interceptor Synthetic 2-cycle oil" which is "Supposed "to be very good
Gee I wish Seidel made fuel!

Most manufacturers dont recommend using synthetic for break in.

Castor is the ususl base oil. Lawn bot would only be suitable for two strake gas engines

Instructions say synthetic oil.

If they recommend Synth then it must be ok, I have never heard of Glissol but it must be oil, probably from Germany thats where the engines were designed and developed. Aks Abu to ck with his German friend. Unless you want to obsess over mixing fuel you need to come up with a good break in fuel anf then a nornal run fuel.

That is 6 different fuels!!??
It's not six different fuels. It's six different mixtures of the same two elements. And technically, the only "fuel" is methanol. The other component is lubricating oil which is mixed with "the fuel." We're just spoiled from getting to run to the hobby shop and pick up a gallon of pre-mixed juice for our models! So all we need is a jug of methanol and a bottle of synthetic oil. Here in Japan, Saito sells a can of "racing oil" that guys at my field use when they prepare the mixture for their gas engines (which also require a do-it-yourself mixture). One guy just uses a clear plastic bottle with marks on the side for (X amount of fuel and Y amount of oil). It really couldn't be simpler.

But the ONLY question for me is where to buy methanol.

From a fuel blender. Ask them if they'll sell you straight methanol. Cant cost much to find out.

I've contacted COSMO which is the largest RC fuel manufacturer in Japan. We'll see what they say.

If only small quantities of methanol can be had commercially, buy synthetic FAI fuel, which is not technically FAI fuel but is available, and dilute it with the methanol. If FAI is impossible get some 5% and do the same. You might be able to find methanol at a high end furniture/ woodworking store, which is used in shellac; most shy away now because of health but there is always purists out there. If someone is making bio-diesel in the area, methanol is a major part of the process; they had to get it from somewhere.

Morgan Fuels maybe? Cool Power Omega is 0% nitro but it's 17% oil. Synthetic and "''de-gummed" castor....they have a Super-tiger fuel that is 12% oil, but it's got nitro...crazy....

Edit: I found this on Tower's web site, regarding the OS FR7-420 Sirius radial....

REQUIRES: Fuel: Aircraft blend 5-10% nitro content with 8-10% lubricant
content (it is suggested to dilute commercially available 15%
nitromethane and 18% lubricant fuel with methanol half and half to
make a 7.5% nitro and 9% lubricant fuel)

So I suppose you could dilute FAI 0% nitro 17% oil fuel half and half with methanol.....

That sounds like a good practical solution.

TFF, I did find a news item about Japan looking to develop overseas partnerships for methanol production (for bio-fuels), for example, the article mentioned a project in Ghana. So SOMEBODY in Japan is using methanol! But at this point, it's sort of like me contacting Dupont and asking them to sell me a quart of chemicals. I'm sure I'll find a source.

I've read in a couple of places now that you can buy 100% methyl alcohol by the quart at Home Depot. I'll have to give it a try.... google advises that methyl alcohol and methanol are the same...

Other recommendations are go-cart racing tracks, and other racing suppliers. Easy to say, tough to find....

It's also called "wood alcohol." I think I'll also ask in the hardware store if they have this or can order it for me. Now, where's that Japanese dictionary... BTW, it IS different from "methylated alcohol/spirits" where methyl alcohol is added to other forms, for example to render it purposely poisonous!

Well, I found my source, through a friend of a friend who has a friend who runs an animal hospital and has 99% methanol and who is willing to sell me a few liters. That's a start!

Good morning Don,

shouldn't it be possible to import a small quantity of oil to Japan?
In that case, contact my supplier. He'll deliver Aerosynth 3 to you - the best synthetic oil there is on the market! And mind you: for 1 liter of Oil you can use 19 liters of Methanol!.
His Name is Jörg Küppers:

Martin, thanks for the link. I think I'll first try to find a local source. I'm curious though why methanol is so easily available in Germany (at least on that website) white it seems to be some kind of State Secret here in Japan.

As far as importing oil, I would imagine that technically it's going to be on those "no air shipping" lists. [:@]

yes, you might be right with that. However I thought this is probably mostly true for Methanol - very flameable substance. Oil on the other hand? Can't I bring baby oil in my suitcase? Olive oil from Greece as a gift? That's why I thought it is worth a try...

Cheers, Martin

PS: All that fuel and oil talk makes me realize that I haven't burned any lately. But what with fall having set in here in Germany - rain, cold, windy - I'll have to get used to the "turkey" until spring, I guess. Same procedure as every year...

I see that in their check-out procedure there's no way of entering a non-European address (actually only about 8 countries are shown), so I assume that means they don't ship overseas.

Thanks for the offer. First, let me see if a suitable oil is available on THIS side of the world.
