Your welcome Paul,

Ehhhhhhh, and don't forget to use BIG nails and Gorilla glue to attach these plates to your cowl after you changed th engine to the DA-150, otherwise you might loose the plates when howling through the air :D

Bear in mind that if you have used a scale sized stab/elevator (which I believe was the plan) then the elevator response is simply not going to be like what you'd get on a BUSA-style model with its greatly enlarged stab/elevator. Also the elevator response will be even weaker since you don't have a leading edge dipping down as you would on a full-flying elevator. I'm still working out the balance on my 1/6 scale EIII with 100% scale outlines but it also seems to have fairly weak elevator response.

Hey there Wild Bill.......... When we get all the bugs worked out and Larry nails down all the production concerns........I'll let Larry fill you in on the exact release date, but I am thinking spring sometime.

By the way, my BUSA DR1 will be ready for action this season - looking forward to flying some sorties together!

Stab Update

Finished sheeting the stab that I already had framed up.
Put lightning holes in center section and sheeted with 3/32" balsa.
Hinged with large Robart point hinges.

This is much stiffer and resists twisting.

Now back to finishing hinging the ailerons and finishing up with the wings.

I will be releasing it sometime later this spring. Want to get good flight videos and have all of the bugs worked out first.
I am working hard to have the one that I am working on now finished for a large indoor show and swap shop that we have here in Columbus on March 16th.
Kind of a coming out party.

Larry, while that looks like a great "fix" it just doesn't seem like satisfying design solution for a WWI model. Fully sheeted tail surfaces? That's just so...well...WW2. ;) Particularly, for a (light) fabric covered model where all the other structure is readily visible in flight. No PC10 or lozenge to hide such tricks on an EIII. Could you perhaps use CF rod (or tube) for both the stab LE and TE and or cross-bracing between the ribs as seen on the Mick Reeves wing designs?

I know what your saying, but this is made to be a fun scale plane and I may yet still add some cap strips to simulate ribs with the Solartex fabric covering.

The next two projects are going to be competition planes with little or no compromises.
These will be my new "Top Gun" quality models to replace the Super Cub that I have been flying in that event and others.

40% Ryan STA from factory plans. ( Done as YPT-16A at the Air Force Museum)
Half scale Nieuport 17 from the Rosenthal and Hardesty drawings.

Come summer I want to be flying the Eindecker at events, selling Eindecker kits and finishing up the drawings for these two new projects.

I can guarauntee that I will build one of these when it becomes available, I have always loved the Eindecker. Yes me too Art, am looking forward to flying sorties too. I flew last weekend, 1/4 scale Pup with skis on. It was like 12 degrees, wind blowin like 10 mph, windchill like -10 but still fun.

Don, I can't agree with that premise - the overall size of the tail feathers controls whether the airframe flys in a steady, stable stance relative to the direction of flight (it keeps it from wobbling or skidding).

Elevator response is related to how much of the stab is allocated to the elevator. Yes, a full flying stab is more effective than a conventional elevator, but a coventional stab/elevator will still control pitch - even if the overall size of the stab/elevator is too small.

OK, the mods are underway!

I removed the laminate which was orignally glued to the spars (front & back) in the bays where the wing wires would be attached and in their place epoxied 3/32" aircraft plywood sheer webs. As I stated earlier in the thread, anytime I drill into or through the spars to attach anything, this is the process that I use.

Spent the weekend working on the right wing panel.

Some small design changes to the aileron and now it is all hinged.
I can remove the screws from the top of the aileron and it is removable.

Used large dubro hinges and they are screwed into the top of the spar with a cap strip over top.

The control horn rib can be glued in place when it is time to cover,

You are right! It would be a very interesting plane with wing warping and a full flying stab and rudder.

Here's a shot of my third scale EI from a couple of years ago.....it had wing warping and a full flying tail.

Progress report......

added some 1/8" balsa top and bottom to the wing tips before I glue them to the wing.

Also cut some lightening holes in my aileron tips.
