Does anyone know where i could get plans or a kit for a scale Tamahawk?

Not sure about a kit but I'm sure I've seen an ARF tomahawk I think it was made by VMAR.

Yep, VMar makes one of around 80" WS, suitable for .60 2-st or up to .91 FS.
Very reasonably priced ARF with flaps. It also has pilot.
Good flier, looks pretty alright.
And no, I'm not selling mine.

Airsail makes a very nice kit, very scale, for a 54 fourstroke.

I designed a 1/4 scale Tomahawk back in 1978, for the Q35 engine. I had my model flying before Piper had any production airplanes built. Mine was built from three views supplied to me from Piper Engineering. It is exact scale except I widened the wing chord by 1.5 inches, as I just couldn't go that long thin wing. I used a NACA 2418 airfoil instead of the new airfoil that Piper had come up with. These are the plans that are sold by Reid's Quality Model Products. They can supply you with a fiberglass cowl if this is the size you are looking for. Remember that the plans are now 25 years old, so you may see things that need updating.

Here is a photo of my model and the first Piper Tomahawk to be delivered to our area. Twenty years after that delivery, my son Dick made his solo flight in that very same airplane, 9284T.

I like the Tomahawk and have always thought about someday doing one but, the one shown on Reid's web page looks like a single place fuselage. Is it just distorsion of the photo or is that how the plans have you build it? Also... do you have more pictures of yours?

I don't know what you mean by a single place fuselage. Do you mean a one seater? Mine is a two seater - side by side. Attached are a couple more photos. The first is the model taken at dusk with a flash. The second is the model's very first take-off. The third is the three view that was used to design the model. Hope it icomes through clear enough to be of some value.

Your pictures look correct. I think it's just the web page I saw the picture on at Reid's site. How does your plane perform? I'm looking at possibly getting a set of the plans and a cowling from Reid. Is the cockpit open enough for super detailing and would it be possible to open up the doors?

Answer to BrittB: First of all, the airplane flew pretty good. I say "pretty good" because it had a fish-tail at full open throttle. Slow it down a little, and that went away. I talked to the Piper engineers about this (as I had the model completed and flown before they had any production airplanes built), and they told me that the full scale prototype airplane did the same thing. So, knowing that, you might say that the model flew "really good". They blamed it on the fact that the wing and the fuselage join at right angles without the benefit of a fillet, but said that they could live with it because the airplane wouldn't be flown hardly at all at full throttle.

The cockpit is full open. At one time, I sold a complete "to scale" cockpit kit for this airplane, but those haven't been produced for about 20 years, so you probably can't find one. With some structural modifications, Yes, I believe the doors could be made to open.

Remember - my plans are 25 years old. One change I made on later models is to sheet the rear half of the fuselage - the plans show stringers. The model in these photos have stringers.

I don't have a photo of the instrument panel, but here is a photo of my pilots. The young lady had her head attached to the rudder servo, so she would look in the direction the airplane was headed.

I just traded a fellow club member, a super tiger s 90, for a 1/4 scale Piper Tomahawk kit. I don't know much about it, but I believe its the great planes kit. I still have to build it, but I'm looking forward to building it, its a beautiful aircraft! The fuselage is fiberglass, but there are no cut lines for the windows, that I question. The kit is all in tact so I'm happy about that, the plans are old, they say " Don's Custom models" in the title block, and also , designed by, "Mel Santmyers" nov. 1978, I'm not sure what thats all about.
If anybody knows something about this kit, let me know, I'm interested to know more about it. Thank You

To smoknrv4: Good luck on building your kit. The ones that I used to be familiar with were a disaster. When I was producing my own 1/4 scale kit, I sold several wing kits to replace the wings on those models. I'd highly suggest you consider a different airfoil.

to JIM messer: I also have a copy of the magazine, ''Building and Flying Radio Control Giant Scale Aircraft", By Bob Beckman, the one with the Tomahawk features in it. I believe it involves your kit, very informative issue.
It talks a bit about the great planes version, hows the fuselage design? Is it just the wing design thats no good? What about getting plans to build a different wing?

To smoknrv4: I am glad that you have Bob Beckmans book on the two Tomahawks. I knew Bob Beckman very well. One thing you will note is that the only plane shown in the air is the one of my design. Bob never flew the other one because he knew it probably wouldn't fly well. Plans to my Tomahawk are still available from Reid's Quality Model Products, [email protected]. I don't think a separate wing drawing is still available - but you can ask.

I've had a copy of Beckmans book for 10 years now, and everytime I pick it up, I get an urge to build the Tomahawk!

Mr Jim Messer. You are a legend to me. I bought a book titled Building and flying Giant scale RC aircraft by Bob Beckman. It featured your airplane. Great to here from you. Wish you still produced the kit. Thanks for the memeries.
