Engine for Top Flite Arrow

I'm currently building a Top Flite Arrow and need suggestions on an engine. I want a 4-banker and thought about giving thr RCV 91 a try. What do you guys think?

The arrow is about the same size and weight as the Bonanza from Top Flight. A Saito 100 flies that model very well. I have the RCV 90 in a P-26. Remember that the RCV is geared so it operates at about half the RPM of the Saito. You will need to turn a larger diameter and pitch prop. Ground clearance may be a problem.

Here are a couple of photos of Teamscalepilot's Arrow II during practice this last week at Top Gun. It's powered with an OS .91 2c.

I'm just nor sure I want a 2c. I put my first 4banger in my last plane and I love the thing. I was thinking about a Saito 100 anyway. Keep the input coming. Also any ideas about anything to add? I saw the gear doors on the teamscale plane and I love them but this is my first scale project.

I would use the OS 91 you can run it on the rich side and get the same power as the 60. You will note that there is not a lot of hot air exhaust cooling. You have to cut some cheater holes on the bottom of the cowling. (I will have a picture for you) You will like the 91 it's starts easly by back flipping the spinner. The OS 91 is perfect for all the TF 80" kits.. David Pinegar

David,

I'd love a picture of the engine/cowl area. What about the exhaust? I'd hate to ruin a beautiful plane like the arrow with a muffler hanging outside!

I put the exhaust in the scale location. look at the pictures in the thread. the muffler is home made..

Dave, I have been reading these links with interest, as I currently have a kit of the Bonanza, and am considering the arrow. I have seen your T34 fly at the Mint Julip, and it flys well with the OS91 2cycle. My question is this: Having looked at the Tower hobbies web site for the OS 91, it says that the exhaust mounting dimensions are the same as for the 61 Fx. Couldn't you use the header and in cowl muffler for that engine that Top Flight makes, or would the back pressure be too much due to not enough volume? I like the way your birds fly, so I may use that engine in the Bonanza as well as the Arrow if I buy one( I probably will!) Just wondering if the in cowl muffler could work without reinventing the wheel, so to speak. Maybe there could be a mod made to the muffler for back pressure?
Thanks,
Bryan

RE: Engine for Top Flite Arrow

YES TF needs to make a bigger muffler for the 91 . the current can for the 60 is to small. check an old issue of RC Report. Frank Tiano got a muffler from one of the after market mfgs. it worked on the T-34 and will work on the Bonanza. but may not work on the Arrow. I say this only because of the scale location. So I welded one together... won't be at the Mint this year, my wife has other planes for me. She was a BIG help at Top Gun!!!

How did you do at Top Gun? Any problems (other than some cross-wind landings:) )

Jerry

RE: Engine for Top Flite Arrow

Yes the crosswinds were a handfull. The AEW flew well and we had NO problems with motors or batteries. The new Futaba 14m was test flown in the GP Lancair with no problems. Practice days at the TRAC field were great with one day of 90 deg cross winds. this wore the tread on my tires. It was a long week of practice 9 to 5 daily but it paid off with a 2nd place finish in Team scale. Next stop the NATS

Would the Saito 91 twin be sufficient power and fit inside the Arrow Cowling without requiring major surgery?
