RE: Best scale photo!
Bit dodgy Spit pics... but a GREAT model. Is that the one that started life in Finland, and then went over to the UK for some serious technical rebuilding and fitting out?How about a video to show all the petrol-head-e-sceptics exactly how a scale model SHOULD sound?

Hi David, Bit dodgy? What does that mean? ;) No this is the 82" Brian Taylor Spitfire at 18.5lbs and 139 flights to date. Beautiful flyer. Also have 109 and had (now being rebuilt [&o]) the Corsair.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMh5CXyb9_I Here is a photo of the Corsair. |
RE: Best scale photo!
That is indeed nice sound! But how does it smell? :D
|
RE: Best scale photo!
Wicked! And thats a small one.I heard a 1/4 scale eSpit swinging a giant Solo prop. It's was shocking as is, the prop sound alone creating goose pimples even without the sound generator. You guys on the eScale scene are miles ahead... it's surprizing that so many are hostile to the idea.Still, it's impossible to convert those that believe the sound of a screaming 2stroke (normally huge)... is scale.Even worse are those that spend a fortune on a scale muffler... in the hope that it'll now, at last... sound scale. How sad it is.Great stuff jran!

Thanks David and Abu, It has been fun developing it from scratch with Thomas Benedini in Germany. I was a petrol head for 25 years (well glo fuel really) but am totally converted now. The 109 has the full inertia whine start up. Here is a poor recording of the Corsiar starting up.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9BK8...e=channel_page Abu, Have done an electric JU88 with smoke but that was a few years ago now. John |

How sad it is.Great stuff jran! You miss the point entirely. The point in having an IC engine is that the real aircraft had an IC engine. There's a bond there. A stinky, oily bond, a get your hands dirty bond. That's why turbines in scale jets are so cool. When real aircraft start using electric motors (with jumbo lipo batteries) that's when I'll convert! ;):D Out of curiosity, how loud is the simulated sound vs. IC engine noise? I'm curious since one of the major arguments for going electric has been the decrease in environmental noise. |

Hi Ab, We won't get into a debate especially on the photo thread, but the sound is nearly as loud as the I/C equivalent but can be turned down at the amplifier(s) or switched off at the transmitter. My aim is to make it look and sound as near to the full size as possible. It is for others to judge whether it has been successful.
If you can hear past the music and the flak (gun club nearby) then you will get an idea. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6MxIr07vMYs Here is my 100" dh 103 Hornet. Electric with sound again, sorry. :D John |
RE: Best scale photo!
Brilliant JRAN, just brilliant!!!! (Not the photohttp://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...n/rolleyes.gif... the sound)<div>And ABU, I get your point but....
<div>I can expect scale sound and presentation to seriously start influencing competition scale judging in the not to distant future...</div><div>Once you've whitnessed these big eScale models in real life (and it's 10 times more impressive than on video), you're hooked!</div><div>Everything sounds, well just plain wrong afterwards. And that's going to have an effect on the mental impression of the judges... even if it shouldn't.</div><div></div><div>Take for example a big gas powered model trotting alone at half throttle (trying to keep the Noise and RMPs down) then pulling up for a big scale loop. You've just got to add POWER. That means all off a sudden, huge engine noise, prop tips going balistic... illusion ruined.</div><div></div><div>Now try the same with ePower. You can set the sound generator to produce simulated max engine sound at say 1/2 throttle. (any more movement of the throttle stick from then on doesn't change the engine sound). Now cruse slowly past at half throttle (engine sound simulation full throttle) and then pull up for an enourmous scale loop by adding more and more wonderfully proportional electric power... and the engine sound doesn't change. As in real life!</div><div>Now that's going to have a MASSIVE effect on the judges semiotic perception of the scale manouver. No doubt about it... and as stated before... even if it shouldn't... IT WILL.</div><div>Im' a glow head.... but I know where this is going, the writing on the wall baby... and I take my hat off to the guys that have embraced this 110%. It's Great.</div><div></div></div> |

I wouldn't have time to go through every post on this thread to see if this Master piece had been posted..
When it's finished it belongs at the Smithsonian .. Check this out.. 1/6 scale airco DH-2 scratch build DCflyer over at WattFlyer posted his latest master piece.. Just simpy amazing workmanship.. http://www.wattflyer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=49608 http://www.wattflyer.com/forums/atta...9&d=1252073042 http://www.wattflyer.com/forums/atta...4&d=1252943374 http://www.wattflyer.com/forums/atta...6&d=1252943374 http://www.wattflyer.com/forums/atta...7&d=1252943374 http://www.wattflyer.com/forums/atta...0&d=1253906363 One of the amazing things of this master piece is the size.. Just compare it to the cool whip container the nose is resting on.. http://www.wattflyer.com/forums/atta...1&d=1253906573 When it's finished an it's photographed with some old hanger in the distance, it will be truly amazing a site.. |

Look, one's missing! |

Abu! A rather extreme method to add weathering!
|
RE: Best scale photo!
I think the weathering is nice myself.

RE: Best scale photo!
It's interesting to compare the real oil drippings (very light yellow) just below the top decking with the artificially created oil drippings (black) near the panel. Paul, Bokuda was joking about the big hole in the cowl caused by a power crash into the bamboo.
|
RE: Best scale photo!
I see now. I hadn't even noticed the hole until now that I'm studying it more closely.
Ouch! That's some gnarley bamboo. |

On use of perspective for effect. The following is not even an Rc Aircraft, but thought the subject matter would be of interest here to get peoples creativity flowing.
This image is of a plastic static model, but the use of the foreground and back ground is quite good, as well as the way he makes the plinth with the fake grass the subject is on, blend into the background, almost like its a cut grass field next to a non cut area. And the panoramic background is perfect in giving the small plane a sense of size. Very well done I think. ZZ. |
RE: Best scale photo!
I agree it's a good illusion. However, the camera is probably bit too high. From "human height" were would be able to see under the top wing.
|
RE: Best scale photo!
Good point Abu, this may though, be due to the angle you are looking at the subject. For instance, if it was turned more to the side or front, you would very likely see under the wing. So if its too high, it isn't by much. I'm amazed that with such a small subject he was able to capture the illusion you mention. Wingspan cant be more than five or six inches....maybe less. We should be able to do much better with our larger craft. And even the slightly out of focus element gives the crew members a lifelike effect. You cant really focus on them too much to see they are fake. If its intended or a "happy accident" I don't know. All I know is that we can learn from it cause it really works well.;)

A DH 2 that i flew. Not as nice as the one pictured above but flew well once we had it trimed out.about 14 years old, Spectrum radio, Laser 150, 10kg

RE: Best scale photo!
It's not fair that you have actual English countryside to use as a backdrop! ;)

RE: Best scale photo!
Richard, are you and the DH2 making it to Osbournby tomorrow?
Cheers, Ian. |
