The stuffing tube will need to filled with grease. I like using an automotive wheel bearing grease the dark brown stuff. Others like a white lithium type of grease.

jserb,
The stuffing tub/tube/box ought to have some kind of grease or oil in it to act as a seal. Whatever you use shouldn't be too 'thick', but should be non-soluble in water (makes sense, huh?). Lots of different opinions of whats 'best', so pick one you can live with (I like the grease used on fishing reels, comes in a 'pointy' tube which makes it easy to apply, cheap, readily available around here!). Another thing to check is the hull where the stuffing box goes through, make sure there's no leaks.
Have fun...

Sure, the stuffing tube/box/whatever should be sealed to the hull. Except for a wanted hole, there are no 'good' holes in a boat, right? And like everything else, there's almost always more than one way of doing that. Pick the one that's best/easiest for you. If that sealant doesn't dissolve in water, doesn't 'eat' what it touches, it ought'a work fine. Who cares what it looks like... within reason!
