Do they make any kind of winches for tugs? Is so where can you find them

But all the winches were for decoration from what i saw. I was looking for something i could control with a remote.

I think a couple of the larger graupner winches would lend themselves to operation also, providing you are handy with a sprocket and chain, or pulley and belt.

You could use a wind screen wiper motor and run it off a 6 volt battery. There was one selling on ebay (do a search for "Tug Winch") but I am sure you could buy a new wiper motor for about $20 or a second hand one (at the wreckers) for about $5. Then it is just a matter of wiring it up to a switch which is driven by the receiver to put the motor into forward or reverse. These motors are really strong and would have no problem lifting a boat out of the water, if that is your aim.

In addition to my last post, I have drawn up some simple plans to run an electric motor forwards and reverse using a micro servo to switch two micro switches. I have not tried this plan but in theory it should work.

I am going to build it and use a planetary gear system to turn the winch on the back of my tug boat. I will house the motor, gearing and relay in a water resistant container.

Not sure how successful I will be, but in the interest of making things better, I am willing to give it a go

It probably would spin a bit fast, but there is always gearing It depends on the size of the boat and what you want to winch. At the moment I am playing with a small motor as I am on letting out some rope with a little fish float on the end. What I do with that is drive around the boat the I want to tow back so that the rope catches onto it. Then I drag the boat back with my tow boat. The gearing doesn't need to be super strong as when I apply the motor, it is only winching in the rope and the float.

However if you wanted to winch a boat in, then a bigger motor is definitely needed, and some serious gearing is a must. I have found a bunch of educational kits from [link=http://www.tamiyausa.com/product/item.php?product-id=70167]Tamiya[/link] that are small and provide you with a set of gearing to slow down motors. If you wanted to retrofit your Sears drill into the gearing I couldn't see a reason that it wouldn't work. Most motors will spin fast when you turn the on, but the gearing you apply will slow it down, and give you more torque.
