Gear Reducers
I am considering putting Dumas gear reducers in my American Beauty to shift the motors away from the side wals (cannot install screws). They seem cheap and look like they may be quite noisy. Any experience with these or any other suggestions? I would like to shift the horizontal of my motors 3/4" to 1" off the shaft centerline.

'L.C.',
Any/every thing that moves (and some that don't) produces noise. How 'much' noise is variable, so is how much you find objectionable. 'Some' noise adds to the realism of things (and I've never heard a boat that wasn't making noise of some sort). If those moving thingys (gears) make noise, but they do what I want them to do, I tend to be sort of forgiving. If I can hear them a block away, then it usually means I 'messed up' some way. My fault, but still a matter of "them noisy @#$ things!", you know?
I've never used any 'Dumas' gears so can't honestly say how noisy they are. I have used others, though, and while they did make noise, it wasn't all ~that~ much noise, so who cares?

I'll go along with gears being noisy. I like using timing belts and pulleys. http://www.sdp-si.com/
