Small outboard motor for experimental scale model?
Hello, I am co-captain of my University's solar boat team. We are constructing a new hull this year, but this time we would like to test several 1/8 scale models before we construct the final hull. We considered building a water tunnel, but we've decided it would be more practical to just strap a motor onto the models and test them in the conveniently located pool across the street.
Can you folks suggest an economical motor that we could use? The final weight of the model should only be about 12 ounces. The model itself is made of a balsa frame with a shrink wrap skin and weighs less than a half ounce. The motor doesn't need to be terribly powerful. I'd like for it ti simulate a real outboard motor as closely as possible.
Edited to add: The models we have built so far are 24" long, 2.5 inches wide, and sit about an inch and a half to two inches in the water.
Thanks.

DankJones,
I am sure the minds on this site can possibly come up with something practical for you. Help us help you, post detailed pictures of the hulls in mention along with measurements so that the folks here can begin tossing in their ideas.

Finding an outboard motor that fits your 'wants' might be difficult.
Just a thought, Tamiya produce a small 'submarine motor' that may well do the job..

It might be easier to take the third world approach, and go for the long shaft idea. Make a frame with a motor at the boat end with a clip for mounting, and a fairly long shaft with the prop at the outboard end, all in line. The motorised sampans and canoes seem to go well.
