Default Making the HK Princess boat more realistic

Hi all!

I recently purchaced the Princess boat from Hobbyking.

It is allmost ok boat in stock form, but not really scale looking/working.

Short video of it on 2s and SV27 strut/cable.(and half throttle, it would spray huge rooster at wot)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UcHmu8rg7A

I started to mod it a bit.

Surface piercing prop had to go, the rooster tail it made was massive.

I removed the strut and rudder, filled the holes and cut small hole at the bottom of the hull.

Then I made the stuffing tube and a piece of ply to strenghten it.

Added a piece of styrene to get the shape correct, filled with epoxy.

Then some fiberglass filler and sanded it to shape and hitted it with primer.

Then I painted the stern white and the bottom to satin black(to look like antifouling paint)

Modified a servo to continuously rotate and attached that to the radar using drive dogs,2mm shaft and 4mm brass tube. The table(styrene) rises with the hatch and hides the moving bits when lowered.

First radar test http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5dYAWkVntc

Now I´m waiting parts from Cornwall modelboats(rudder,propeller,anchor,chain,fenders.. .) so I can get it back to water.

Hi, very nice boat i am planning on ordering one very soon.
I have a few questions: What kind of battery/prop are you running, or looking to get? What top speeds did you see?
Also, why are ya getting rid of the surface drive?

Verado, the reason for these mods is simple: I want it to look and move like a real boat.

The stock flex/driveshaft combo is rubbish and the propeller included has too large hole, it wobbles like crazy(4mm shaft and 3/16 prop). Proper .150 fle shaft with 3/16 propshaft fixed that.

Here is a video of it on 2s,stock prop and on wot at some points. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgbO-sD5mfk
no gps readings, but i belive it is close to 20mph on 2s
the esc is rated 3s so It is capable of faster speeds then you see on video.

The propellers I have ordered for this are sub surface ones, so less pitch and smaller dia.

I have many fast boats, this one will become slow relaxing cruiser with long run times.

I guess ill have to wait and see..i have a SV lying around ill probably use some parts on that for the Princess.
Im going for the complete opposite, im looking for a nice top end Hopefully in the 30s, i may swap out the motor but i have no idea with what.
I will probably order a few cf props, any ideas what sized to try out?

Anyway, i have a few ideas...i saw some neat lights on ebay that would look awesome in blue...so it would match the hull. Probably order 2 and put them in the rear underwater on each side.

I will order the boat within the next few days so until i get it i cant see what im working with!
However when i saw this thread it was exactly the same question i was asking myself a little earlier in the day

If you swap the esc to turnigy 180Amp marine(or other better one) ,you could use 4s on stock motor and it would fly! -I dont know would the stock esc handle 4+ cells.

-and you would have reverse too! -messes with the realism when a boat only goes forward...

The stock prop is really weird shaped, but it is 40mm, so maybe a [link]http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/products.php?cat=Carbon+Props[/link]Graupner 42 to 45mm would work well.

If you have 3/16 brass tube you could use the 3/16 props on it(like the ones on SV) ,by doing [link]http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/info-pages/fit-propellers.php[/link]this

There are few videos of the princess with led´s and they look cool.

Im a little confused. Why does this only run on 1 lipo battery?

Because it is wired that way -this only has 1600kv motor and 120A esc that is rated 3s, so there is no need for 2 packs in series like on Sv and other fast boats.(and there is no need for 2 packs on faster boats eighter, 2 are used because the weight balance is easier to get correct using 2 packs (one on both side)s then one in front -usually.)

The battery is mounted front of the motor, so twice the battery=twice weight on front so it would nose dive more on 2x 3s.(or 2x 2s) I plan on installing the batteries(2x 5000mAh 2s1p packs paraller) to the back of the hull so it would have 7.4v 10.000mAh =loong runtime.

The stock esc has Deans(or copy) on it and it never gets warm, so the motor is not Amp hungry.

And yes, I will update this thread when I get the parts ordered installed(will be here next week).

Thanks for the clarification

What other mods/ideas did you have in mind?
Is the princess name on the side of the hull a decal or is it painted on? I think its ugly and is among the 1st things i would change, imo.

The blue stripe and princess text are both gelcoat = only goes away if sanded off. Tried acetone and it did nothing.

Future mods include an anchor winch, figures, bow thruster, etc.....

Tested 35mm and 3s also...on 3s it is too fast and cavitates badly(lifts the hull off water).

on 2s... WOW I really like the speed and handling!

Will post video when I return from the sea on sunday, few teaser stills .

Thanks, next I will finish my friends boats(deltaforce 33,fastech and finnsport). after that I guess I´ll make outboard powered sportboat.

The fasteck and finnsport projects are updated at offshoreelectrics dot com forums, threads named "fastec z-drive" and "finnsport " Search for them at OSE if you like to see something new -or just search under user "fastvee" over there.(I belive that linking to the threads is not allowed here)

the deltaforce project is viewable under user matti1983 threads at OSE.

I'm interested in building one of these. Can you please tell me how you figured out how far back to place the prop under the hull? Could you also possibly post a link to the 35mm prop you used as well as the rudder setup?

Thanks in advance!
