Hey all,

Im new to rc subs but im good at building. Does anyone know if its possible to convert the new revell uboat thats about 3feet long and convert it to rc? if so i would like a small explanation of how.

i want to get into R/C subs, and I dont see why not, but i wouldnt bother putting all the tiny little bits on, the force of the water on those little bits will break them off

This sub is a complete conversion that I did, everything was built by me. :-)

I will find out how easy it will dive this weekend, the rest was fairly easy to do, just find a plastic outlet store and grab some 2.5 O.D. tubing and then cut it about 10 inches
find a gear box that will feed twin shafts and a motor from radio shack, which the motor is in the wet along with the servos..

so far the testing is showing a Uboat that will work so I'm waiting to go to the lake for testing.

wait a minute, are you saying the servos and motor are not isolated from the water, now I know at low voltage electronics can work in water, but are you sure this isnt going to damage those components?

Servos are water proof, you dip them in tool dip up to the gear head and then use a o-ring and silicone grease on the o-ring and then crank the arm down on the servo and you
own a water tight servo. :-)

the motor was broke in inside a cup of water, yes it will work for long peroids of time, check with the Subcomitte website and ask aany of the Oldtimers there.

could you go inot detail about your conversion

Well if you build this sub, take one of the props to the hobby shop and match the shaft size for beginners, drill out the shaft support for the shaft size and then drill the hole
into the hull of the uboat. USE A DRIMEL TOOL! now for the pressure hull, some of you here know how to make one, mine is very crude but it works well for this application.
Now somebody asked about the wet motor, make sure you break the motor in submerged in a cup of water, for some reason this breaks in the motor and so far my motor
has not seized. the Servos are easy to do, buy some tool dip from your local hardware store(Lowes) and dip the servo as far as you can. get o-rings and get the size that your servo gear housing is. smear some silicone grease on the oring aand then put the arm down on the gear.. your servo is now water proof.

My Uboat does have styrofoam inside it to give it some floation , I do not believe the WTC alone will let her float but I'm going to make sure the next version will have all the corrections to construction that the first model had. My biggest change will be the motor setup, I will not use a gearbox and a single motor but use two motors and my steering linkage will be made slightly different.

not much change from there, easy to make but if you try to make it complicated, your going to find out you don't have a lot of room but atleast my front diving planes do
work and should aid in the diving efforts. :-) I will find out soon enough when I go to the pond or large swimming pool.

ill think about possiblilty of upgrading this to have like a small ballast pump that i could take in and out.

she looks a little tail heavy and low in the water.
But a model that big, she's begging to have a torp tube or 2 mounted in her bow. Torpedoes Los![>:]

Any suggestion on a ballast tank

just noticed you were from Northridge, I am originally from SoCal. You'd really like Grass Valley if you like the outdoors.
Anyway, I am still really new to subs, so I really don't know of a ballast maker. Probably Dave Merriaman's site or over @ the Sub Committee site you could find your answer. i am still just getting into dynamic divers.

She is when that picture was taken, been so busy lately I haven't taken her to the pond yet...

Hi guys,

Although my main thing is EDF's I'm also in love with subs. I also picked up one of the Revell subs from Smith Brothers in Northridge and will be building it soon. I plan a WTC for it that I'll make a plug for and vacuum form with all the indentations for motors and servos so I can keep everything water tight. We'll see how it goes and I will post the build in a new thread soon. As I plan to test it in my swimming pool I worry about the chemicals harming the gear.

It's true about breaking in electric motors in water I've done it for planes in the past. But now that I've switched to brushless that's no longer necessary.

I've been on leave for the past three weeks due to getting married earlier this month and going back to work after being off for a month..
but I hope to get the testing done with soon.. I'm being asked alot of questions and I have no more information to give people so far.
I will get everything I can together and get videos to boot if possible, right now in Ohio it's cold and windy and finding a lake or pond In Lebanon
that is debre clear and the water is clear is almost impossible.

Will try soon before it gets too cold!
