More Fun with a $12 sound card(Pershing added)
Awhile ago I started a thread about a $12 sound card I was using to record cannon blasts to use with a DBC. These cards work great as you can model any cannon sound you want and make it tank specific. 12 bucks well spent IMO
Tired of the awful RX tank in motion sound, you know the horrid clicking noise, I decided to try and use one of these sound cards to aid in coming up with a better sound.
I downloaded sounds off a real Tiger, and built myself a sound clip in Audacity. I downloaded the sound into this card, and set the file to loop.
This is what I did, and the video is what I got. The idle sound is played through the RX 18 speaker and is loud. Almost drowns out the clicking noise, but not quite. This is a good thing, because as the tank is in motion the variable clicking noise interacts with this idling sound to give a combined change in sound with tank speed. THis is no Tamiya or Elmod, but for 12 bucks is a very inexpensive option to enhance the stock HL sound
The video is shot as the tank is sitting idling.

Here is a video demonstating how the sound card mixes with the onboard Heng Long sounds, to produce something better then stock

Currently the way I have this wired up on this tiger, as soon as you turn the tank on you immediately get the idling sound. On my Pershing I used a 5 volt regulator pulling it's supply voltage from the Smoker circuit. As you know this circiut is inactive through the start up sequence. So you can start the tank, get the Heng Long start sounds, and then once the tank has started the smoker circuit activates this sound card, with the enhanced idling. This is a better way then my original, but does require a voltage regulator.
On to a Panther now.

Here is my Pershing(Note the new nose art). I am using a new camera, and haven't got the formatting figured out yet. These videos are coming out too wide.
Anyway the audio is the important thing. This demonstrates how it works when you tap the smoker jack for power.( REGULATED TO 5V)

Thanks for the comments.
I will do up a dedicated thread as I wire up my Panther. This will be using the 5V regulator off the smoker Jack.
For sound files I just use youTube and harvest real sounds from tank engines. The Pershing is the Ford V8. You have to use three of pieces of freeware. Keepfile, Convert any video, and Audacity. Keepfile harvests the youTube file, and convert file changes it to a format that Audacity likes.
Audacity lets you clip the part out of the sound clip you like and enhance it. I tend to slow the track down a bit for the model. Kind of like playing a 45 on 33 1/3. Oldtimers will not whatI am talking about
Yellowshaker stasrted a thread and WSN jumped in an added extremely useful infomation on using this software. If you are thinking of going Elmod , you should bookmark this thread as well. Extremely useful info on sound file management

Of course if you PM me I can send you the clips.
Sometime in the near future I am going to update my website, and get the tank portion up to the same speed as my Model railroad was. A helpful hints, and project page. I may even incude a work bench video presentation monthly or something. Over the last 3 years, there have been numorous ideas hatched, and I think I might try to capture them as "How to's" on my web page.

Hi YHR that will be great!! you should post it in the frequntly asked ?'s section also so it will be easy to find because it's pinned at the top of the board... also put in there that they can PM message you for the sound files you have made because for me that would be great and i am also sure for others also who don't know how to do those types of things.

Just wanted to say that you came up with an ingenious solution to the problem.
I hope you can get the other post locked so it doesn't become cluttered with anything other than "how to" for the sound card idea you have come up with, and improvements/additions beyond that, with no comments/questions allowed in the thread.

Hi, YHR I'm new member here, I just buy new Tauchpanzer tank from Henglong.
I just discuss with my friend a few day ago about how to change or mod sound of tank and my friend suggest me to read forum in RCU and finally I found your topic.
I am very interesting in you sound clip and if you don't mind , can I pm you to get the clip?

Sounds pretty good and cheap.
There is another option but not sure if its valid or not. I had a guy ask me about some RX18's I had, he was looking for the earlier RX18 units and not the ones introduced with the KV-1. The dreaded clicking sound.
Right enough Ihad two lying around that had no track noise but instead had an ok progressive engine noise.
So I was wondering if it would work using the older RX18 and the sound card for track noises?
