Battlefield trees
Time to hit the craft stores for discount miniature trees. Usually all Christmas stuff is 50% off.
I just picked up six 12" small pine trees for $2.00 each. These are perfect for the 1/24 & smaller stuff. When I was in Connecticut I used to go to Michaels, they had 18" pine trees for about $3.00 each, these are good for the 1/16 tanks.

RE: Battlefield trees
Yes, this is a great time of year to snag some good deals on trees. I have donated over a hundred of these to the AAF battlefield over the years. Here is a picture of a giant truckload of hobby store trees that Randy (pictured) and James bought last year in time for the "Winter Fun Run". I think they found them at 70% off retail.
But for even cheaper trees, I also like to pick up the six foot tall artificial Christmas trees that have been discarded curbside this time of year. I remove the individual limbs and reshape them to form trees that are about 18 inches high. I have donated over a hundred of these "re-scaled trees", cut from 4 large artificial trees, to the Danville indoor battlefield over the years. I attach 4 or 5 of these limbs to a scrap piece of lumber so they will stand up straight. Below is a van-load of trees I delivered last year. Notice the 1"x6" lumber under each "hedgerow". This was old lumber I found in the attic crawl space of my house. So the whole project was zero cost!
Then the wooden bases are covered over with dirt when the trees are "planted". An example is shown below from a couple years ago. Notice how I mixed limbs from several different artificial Christmas trees to give it some variety in color. These trees are perfect scale for our 1/16" scale battlefield. (But keep in mind that these are still only half the height that mature trees should be...but we have to make allowances for visual lines-of-sight for us RC tank boys!)

Picked up a bunch of these after a tip-off here from the Niagara club: (thanks again guys !)

They were well received on Tuesday when the Detroit club met [8D] - they also come with their own stands, which is useful if like us you are meeting indoors over the winter .
They are maybe a little on the short side at 17", but $1.27 each and $10 shipping for a box of 20 I don't think you can argue with them - they are certainly better looking than the 2ft ones from 'Bed Bath & Beyond' we were using this summer [8D]
