Maybach HL230P45 Engine
It’s been some time since I completed the Tiger but the build is still incomplete the next phase is the Engine and compartment this has been done by one or two people but not to a reasonable level of detail I will try to add more detail than has been previously done the first stage is to build the compartment this I have already done the next is to obtain an engine there have only ever been 2 engines built one in metal from John Goode in America this is a very nice engine though not 100% correct and sadly no longer available http://www.sixtharmygroup.com/portal...pic.php?t=4836 the other in Resin from Spain http://www.planetacomic.net/militar_...e.aspx?Id=2433 these are €100 plus the postage and once inspected are less than perfect in casting and have a massive amount of in-correct detail so much so that a lot of scratch building will have to be done whoever did the master mustn’t have used much reference material for the build.
Once I received the engine which is pre-built and not to a high level I started to remove as many parts as possible the problem with this engine is the massive amount of air bubbles and warped ill-fitting parts some just not sanded down properly, parts are glued in the wrong place some parts don’t exist on the real engine, one thing for sure is this is going to be quite a long build to get it looking anything like, though I will only be concentrating on the top half from the rocker covers up.
After spending some time comparing the engine with pictures I have come to the conclusion that the engine bears little resemblance to the original and if you want an engine that is correct then the best thing to do is either try and obtain a second hand John Goode engine though vastly better still has a few flaws or scratch build one completely.
I won’t be doing a step by step build as I’m finding it difficult to concentrate on something so appallingly bad and inaccurate I haven’t taken any pictures of the engine recently so will use old pictures once I have completed the makeover I will post more
Reference Material.
This is proving to be a problem as most of the reference material out there is based on the Bovington Tiger which originally had a HL210 engine and apart from having a smaller CC size there are various other dissimilarity’s namely the different location of the magnetos and the addition of an integral declutch for the cooling fan drives most books only have small pictures of the HL230 engine and some are the slightly different P30 engine there is also a complete lack of late Tiger engine compartment pictures so I may have to make a special trip to Saumur to see what I can picture via my contacts though this may not be achievable for a few months if at all, it will also give me the opportunity to take pictures of my next project

My Feedback: (1)
There are some interesting details one may pick up from these videos of an HL230

Thanks for the info Jerry.
I have done a small amount of work on the engine but as all the dimensions are massively out it really isn’t worth trying to make parts in a scale size so parts have been made to look something like just like the rest of the engine, there has also been a large amount of filling done as there are more holes in the mould than the government’s half arsed levy on bankers bonuses, there is still a lot more to do including the pipework to the radiators

During my research on the HL230P45 engine fitted to the Saumur Tiger it came to my attention that this is not a P45 engine but rather a P30 as fitted to Tiger II or Panther the engine is also missing the magnetos but this is probably to maintain running order of another tank, the engine was probably fitted after it was captured by the French thus far I haven’t found any information that SS102 shared maintenance areas with 9th SS H or 12th SS HJ both had Panthers but then the French captured quite a number of Panthers that were in service until the 80’s so it’s highly likely that the French replaced the engine on this tank, it is known that the French had 2 Tiger I and at least 1 Tiger 2 but my conversations with Saumur says they have no war time records so anything was possible
Here is the completed engine like I say it’s far from perfect but a lot better than it was to begin with some detail I have missed as it won’t be seen next comes the job of installing it in the Tiger.

The saga of the Maybach continues work on the bay is now complete again I must stress that most information available is based on the Bovington Tiger which is an early model and thus has a different engine and compartment layout, most people who have added engines to their late Tigers have incorrectly built a type 1 firewall when they should have a type 3 firewall

Time for a bit of “Rolf Harris” out comes the airbrush and paint some time later the engine looks like this, then once dry will be reinstalled in the Tiger and take a few more pictures though this will be the end of April before this happens I have a few other upgrades to install after our family holiday

Hi Rivetcounter,
Top marks again it looks great .Have a little idea for you ,have you thought about fitting a motor in it from the bottom with a little excentric cam on it ,wire it to the speed control and the engine should shake,to the speed of the sound.Similar to the things found in hand controlers on PS3.
regards pete

Very Nice. I like the idea of a pager motor inside of it to make it shake. Not sure how big this thing is, but image a speaker inside of the block that generated sound as well. I wonder what it would sound like ported out the exhaust???

Thanks for the comments chaps it makes it all worth wile though I’m still not happy with the engine and if a decent one came available I wouldn’t hesitate to change it.
Pete now there is an idea but it would have to wait a while as there are other things in the pipeline
Rex, I’m trying to get to your level of work.
YHR, have a look at the first picture in the thread there are speakers either side of the engine exiting through the large vents, I will take some pictures of the engine next to my 1/16 Tigers to give you an idea of size.

Yes I see that. I bet the location of the external speakers, present the sound well. I was just thinking how cool it would be to put a small speaker inside the block along with the idea of a small pager motor. To hit a start button and see engine shake and the sound come out ported exhuast would be awesome.
I doubt I will ever have a 1/6 scale tank, but maybe a 1/6 scale engine with the above add ons might be a project I could tackle.

This is the end of the engine build; all is now installed in the bay complete with all items associated with a late Tiger it’s not as good as I would have liked but can and probably will be improved upon in the future, if a better engine or better information comes available then there will be improvement’s as I’m not completely happy

Well that is awesome. I think I might get one of these as a stand alone Desk item. Maybe Look at hollowing out the resin casting and see about sticking a speaker into it. The thing is much bigger then I imagined!!!!! Those aircleaners look almost big enough to hide some Ipod sized speakers in.

YHR, the engine is already hollow and you could easily install an MP3 player this would be a very good desk item especially with sound installed.
The website is only in Spanish and I believe they wouldn’t post to Canada/US if you do order one and have problems drop me a PM I will be able to sort the postage from Belgium.
