People have been questioning the RX 18 and how heavy of a tank it can handle. My experience has been with the 3:1 gear reduction and stock motors it can handle a Metal Mato Tiger with Metal running gear. This is a very heavy tank, and as you can see the RX 18 does a good job. Will it do super spins, no. Should it do super spins, No. So if you are planning a heavy tank don't rule out the very cost effective RX18. When properely geared it can handle the task. The RX 18 when properly geared is a robust ESC. I have yet to have one fail when mated to a 3:1 reduced gear set.

Absolutely correct as I found out in Danville.That can be fixed with the upgraded DBC chip though. It tips the bathroom scale at 15 pounds

I would be interested to hear more about that, my DBC equipped Stug could benefit from something like that.

Darkith has them available. You have to unset the PIC chip and install a new one.

The DBC upgraded in Danville seemed to work

I requested a new chip and am going to try it. Once it gets here I can video the tank being hit, and we will see what happens. It will either improve it or it won't. Nothing like a real live test to end speculations.

There has been quite a bit of debate about the merits of metal add-ons in the the UK club recently, the general consensus is that because we run in long (usually damp) grass we would be better off with lighter vehicles. Certainly I have found this to be the case with my SU-152 (El-Mod) and KV-2A (Tamiya), neither of which manoeuvres well on soft ground. Conversely my TamMato Sherman (Tamiya) and T34's (RX13/14) are quite nimble.

as you say most of our (if not all)battlefields are meadowgrass which is a real b****h on the running gear of most tanks even my tam sherman tried uprooting a tuffet of the stuff at the MVT gloucester show

again this seems to be a type of ground choice and the fact we dont have scale grass to run around on

that said though my asiatamed tiger with asiatam gearboxes runs through and chomps away at 6-7" deep meadow grass

good job the RX18s fets are rated at about 22amps this is where its needed

I have a one-off 'extra-uprated' chip in my Panzer IVH (RX-14P, Asiatam gears), and it still isn't wonderful on grass. What I would really like to see is some sort of power boost for the HL boards, at the moment we are stuck between a $25 module that is just about ok to battle with, and a ~$100-$150 high end controller like the DMD and Thinktank.

Now hows this for an idea - servo splitter cables for the DBCRC2, that drive the RX board for sounds and turret functions, and a $70 aftermarket ESC like a sabretooth for the motors? Anyone try that before?

Nice tank ,looks like a good runner and I do not see any Flex in your tank, too bad about the super spin but I guss thats the trade off to get rid of all that Tank Flex I read about .

YHR when you say unset the PIC chip , do you mean unsolder, and I will have to find out which chip is the PIC chip, but that take all the fun out of it ??

Tamiya Tank flex what a joke lol

Latest Rx18 v7 and laters 'silver can' motors do have ALOT of more power....

I just dont get it I can run my Tamiya Tanks all day long in the Summer time with no problems and no fan to cool anything the only thing that stops me is the batt.

What is there to get?

The video is just showing that a 15 pound tank can be moved around with an RX 18.

I can run a Heng long all day long with a standard RX18 too. The RX 18 in this video had no upgrades or cooling fans. Matter of a fact I have an RX18 in a Tamiya Sherman, and it has no issue moving that tank around all day as well.

electronically speaking the RX18 has good components in it the only real issue is the quality/thickness of the copper on there boards it's very thin and as your fets are trying to use this as a heatsink well it wouldnt stand up to much

i have both tamiya and h/long and imho it's only really the sounds and not having a tam compatible i/r system that is letting them down

The tamiya dmd also allows you to lock on track to perform pivot turns and has a better speed control element which makes a bunch of difference on grass imo!

Is that the max stall current they can tolerate, is it the continuous output? I thought the RX-18 was pushing out around 10A with the later FET board - or have they changed again recently?

you can do that with the RX18 setup if your nimble enough with your fingers

that is the max stall current but if you lodge it against the wall the heat build up will fry your board not due to the fets burning but the copper on the board popping and or the pants non leaded solder giving in and sliding down the fet

this is also what happened to that slu we tested and dead shorted the FETs survived but the copper gave up

How do you perform pivots on grass with the rx-18? I can do them on normal surfaces but even with 3:1s it doesnt work on grass

Ouch! I try to avoid doing stuff like that - gawd knows I have enough Dead RX13's and 14's in my spares box [X(] don't need to go frying anything more expensive...

As far as I know the RX-14P's have the same FET board as the later RX-18's (large square chips on one side of the FET board). As you saw at MVT, the PzIVH was 'serviceable' with its 'extra uprated' DBCRC2 chip and RX-14P, but wasn't about to challenge anyone to a drag race - be interesting to compare it with Stu's Tam PzIV sometime on the same surface (assuming I can find parts to fix the gearbox with [:@]).

it's realativly easy once you get the right pressure on the stick does tack a bit of practice mind

my tiger will also superspin in heavy grass
