I have been to Bovington and the admission is worth every penny. It is the Smithsonian Institute of tanks. To see the Tiger runing.... is a dream come true. Who else wants to go? If we fly in Thurdsay and leave Monday the flights cost are $650 to 725 from NYC. Hotel and car rentals costs can be shared. Maybe even add on Isle of White, Imperial War museum or even Samur???? Any one else dare to live dream?

Walk a mile in my shoes.....don't take this wrong. Greg and I are good friends. I am not angry. But I do need to clear the air sometimes when a conversation takes this course.
The life expectancy for my job is 59 years. It was 57 when I started in 1982. The cop I replaced killed himself at age of 52. In 30 years I've able to share 12 Christmas days with my family. It took me 11 years to work up to the first X-mas off in the 90's. I've been on rotating shifts for 25 or so of the 30 years. It is the second highest stressful job, second highest suicide rate and highest divorce rate. One guy in my department is on his 3rd wife. More than half are divorced. Last year was really bad.... 5 cops in my area killed themselves (3 I knew personally). One was my borther in law's (a retired Sgt) brother who was a sheriff in my county. One cop just 31 years old shot himself 5 hours before our Spring NEAD battle started. I used the the comforter off his couch to cover the pool of blood as I lay on the floor and tried to find the bullet hole in his head. I then met you guys at Sherry Field but was late getting there. About 20% never make the 25 year mark for retirement. Every dirtbag civil liability lawyer (there are good ones too) is waiting for me to make a mistake to sue me and my department over ANYTHING. I have to make a split second life and death decision that a court will take weeks to hear and argue. The a jury of my "Peers" civilians ( I'm not considered a civilian) take days to decide a verdict on what i did in seconds. Everything I say and do on a car stop and road call is video and voice recorded by my boss. Read ANY newspaper and see how many stories involve the police and how many are about a pipe-fitter. Everyone strains their neck to see what I am doing and even tell me they are filiming me with the smartphone for their lawyer. There are more cop shows on TV than any other type (CSI, Llaw and order, 50, etc...) so everyone thinks they know my job. Bergen County is very expensive and my property taxes are abut $10,500 a year. Mainly for schools my kids don't even go to. I sent them to a Christian school. House here are 2 tow 3 time more costly that southern NJ and my mortage is apparently 3 times the size of yours. If I brown bag lunches, and give up some of the 23 weekends I get off to work overtime and hustle some tanks for sale, I can afford the trip. If I can get that weekend off. I love my job because I love to help people. I have also been on the volunteer amb. corps for 25 years which I do for free. I work outside 75% of the time (down from 95% before I was promoted). The worse the weather the more likely I am to be standing out in it. Just like I did in the October snow storm. Cars crashing around me while trees and power lines were falling from above me. I get paid well...but I do it because I love my job.

I am going to have to do some calculating to see if I can go. It sounds like something to do that you will remember for a lifetime. How much is the premium ticket in U.S. dollars? What is the normal ticket price? Where would you fly into in England? Geez, with the wish list I have I need to win the lottery. Dennis

I would love to see the kt run on open country, but the suspension would mostlikle collaps.....and every vid i see of the tiger 1 running makes me think they installed lucas electricsmagnetos and solex carbs. The poor thingruns like crap. Ione tanki would like to see run in a open field isthe littlefield pather a.....

Hummm.... What can I do to convince the bank (wife) to float me the funds? If I can figure it out I would love to go also. Bob, I understand and I would rather have done what I did for 26 years than what you are doing. Thankless to some, but not to me.

The more I think about it the more I want to do it. I was planning on a long vacation this summer to visit family and do Sturgis, but this sounds like a lot better trip. Hello bank(wife). Dennis

I found round trip from Orlando, Fl. to London at $795.00 on Expedia. Thecommander said from NYC to London was around $775. Not great, but doable, especially if enough go to split room expenses. Dennis

I could right a small novel in reply to this post-but i won't.Next time you need to tell someone how tough you have it,try telling one of our people in the military just back from a tour or more in Iraq or Afghanistan your sad story.
And i have four cops in my family (one decessed from old age ).....yes we need them,but there are good ones and a hell of a lot of bad ones also.

Mine is a tough job. It is not for everyone. Neither is the Military. I DO NOT view these officers who took their own lives as bad cops. They just couldn't cope with the stress. I VERY strongly disagree with your statement that there are "a hell of a lot of bad ones(cops)". If Amboy Washington is rife with bad cops I hope they get canned soon or go to jail before they ruin a life or disgrace a honorable profession. I am very proud of my work. My dad, cousins, uncles, were all Vets duing the Korean and Vietnam wars. War is hell. I lost a friend last year to an IED in Iraq while on the 3rd tour. His family sits in a pew near mine in church with one empty seat now. My buddy Ray is a WWII vet who was a POW. The rules of engagement are very different for the police on the streets vs. the military in the field, while the objective of protection remains the same. I'm not asking anyone to cry for me because I surely am not. I deal with these stresses with the assistance on my faith, my family and relaxing hobbies. I was comparing my job to Gregg's job. You are comparing it to the military, not me. Perhaps you should have read both of my RCU posts on Veterans day before you wrote this post. The president says he will end this war by the end of the year. Wouldn't it be great if he could do that for the police as well. My tour is 30 years long and still going....

I am getting real serious about this trip. I hope there are several others who want to go. If I go though, I want to spend more time, maybe as long as two weeks touring England and Europe.
