Sherman M4( It's Green!)
Here is the latest shots of the Sherman I have been working on.
The basic tank is all done, and sprayed to give it an all metal look. From here I will start adding all the smaller detail bits, and then will come OD green.
Something a little different on this one is the opening fuel caps. There is a charging jack under one of them and under the other is the volume control.

Oh my, that looks great Dan. I know you did the metal look base before on a tank and it looked darn good when finished. I forget what paint it is though. Nice job.
Cheers

Looks good. Really like the cast texture and the metal color. Did you use ALCLAD II Paint? It is a metallic buffable paint.

Thanks Guys.
I have another Sherman on the bench, and have just opened up the fuel caps. I will get a few pictures showing how easy it is.

Not sure why I am doing this but I spent most of the evening getting the cast metal Sherman to look better. I am still planning on covering it with Green, but I just had to work on the finish some more.
The fuel cap is shown open. Not quite prototypical, but I did not want to have to be pulling the pins to open these so I cheated a little.

I use automotive spot putty. I wear leather gloves and I spread it around with my fingers. I use masking tape to shield the detail, like the casting numbers, as well as mask off the machined steel plate. I do this in a very thin layer. It dries quick. Once dry I use sandpaper to knock down anything that is too rough.
I started casting my own turrets, so those now are cast with this texture, and I don't have to do anything but paint them.
The fuel hatches are cast as well. I used two part silicone putty and pulled masters of the Tamiya hull. I now just drill out the Mato ones and then add these cast fuel caps . I make the hinges out of styrene tube cut in half and wire. Pictures will be coming, when I get to the next tank.

I took apart the turret to show how the recoil and the elevation is shoehorned into the turret. I had to mount the elevation motor perpendicular to the recoil. This is a little different set up then I normally do. I like this new arrangement as it keeps all the mechanicis in the lower base. (This is the Mato base cut down to fit to my cast turrets.
I have a 30 cal in the mantlet that is lit with an LED.
I also have a picture showing the Tamiya IR sensor mount. (Fabricated out of lego.)
Not the extensive use of lego It is great engineering plastic.
This sensor arrangement also spins with the hatch, allowing me to adjust the angle of the sensor a full 360 degrees and give Dana's idea a try.
Oh yea all the periscopes can be turned 360 degrees as well.

The detailing is all done, and it is ready for some green paint. I fabricated the spring hinge assembly on the Loaders hatch. I haven't done this before, but the results show I may have to do this some more

Hello Dan,
Great work on the Sherman, look forward to a video. That recoil unit is very clever now sure host cost effective it is for you, but I am sure that there is a need for that kind of recoil unit. Wondering if you are considering building up a batch and putting them on the website?

To labour intensive. I will do up a good tutorial though and set it up on my webpage. I have to say this is a sweet recoil unit. Far better then the modifed Heng Longs. I fine tuned this more with this Sherman. I now use a modifed mini Servo for this instead of the HL elevation motor.I buy mini servos from Hobby King and you end up with a very compact recoil unit. , Once I get the next batch in I will do up a video, and show how it is done.

Dan,
Your Sherman looks great, I think the texture on the turret looks exactly right. Great job! Whatever made you choose green? Good choice keep up the good work. I think you might need to be signed up for Shermanaholics Anonymous.

Dan,
I believe you were one of the founding fathers of Sherman's annonomus wern't you? Looking good on this build too.

Not sure how it happened, but I have somehow sunk into the Sherman pit. I am OK in here though. I don't need rescue, just more Shermans.
I still am not happy with the tranny cover. I tried to improve on the ones I imported, by making the output drive frames narrower, but over all the effect is no better. The only way to do this right is to use Bubba's method of using the Tamiya Pershing outdrives.
