T-55 variant help
#1
Hey guys,
I have been putting together my T-55, but I still have not decided on an exact nation or paint scheme, however there is something else I was curious about- I would like to build a T-55 with the night vision equipment, but early enough to not have the AA mg on the turret. Did these have the racks on the back for fuel drums/log/snorkel? I would like to leave it off, but would prefer to be historically accurate if I can.
I saw this picture which has the infrared lamp but not the mg:

It doesn't seem to have the fuel drums either but I have no idea about the log or snorkel...

There were more T-55 built than any other tank and they are still in use today all over the world. I think you could build it to whatever configuration you like best and it would still be historically accurate.

The tanks were jettisoned before battle, used for long distance travel. Also an obvious explosive hazard in combat. So accurate to show without fuel barrels.

Does anyone have advice on the headlamp that is connected to the gun barrel? The lamp's mounts to the turret do not fit at all, and not evenly, I have been looking at it and simply dumbfounded, trying to sand stuff and whatnot but it just seems to be a total pain and is really getting on my nerves.

This is how i'm doing my T-55 when ever i can pick up the kit. everything I'm going to be doing for a while will be modern armor or updated early armor brought up to atleast semi modern config.

Kinda curious, how much would a half built t-55 kit be worth? I only built the lower hull and a few details on the turret.

giving up so quickly? Maybe these will help...

Its much more frustrating at times than I expected. the lower hull and most mechanical parts were a breeze- its the turret and a little of the upper hull that is the problem. I never feel like I am 100% sure I am doing something right, and always worried that about every little part having a small line, uneven edge, or whatever other defect. Many parts that are supposedly the same can be totally different fits, or the instructions may not make sense at all. For example- the commanders turret. The piece that it inserts into has a little notch making sure it will only face one way (backwards) and the manual even shows it installed backwards. In the very next panel however, it is shown facing foward with no explanation at all- along with every other picture. That is an easy fix, but I hope you get the point.

Understand what you mean. I always try to use reference photos of the real thing to make sure I do not attach something the wrong way based on the instructions. I also test fit stuff I am not sure about until it looks right, even if it is not correct according to the instructions. Can drive ya crazy!!!

The only thing that Iam 100% sure of is that people that say they are 100% sure aboutanything arealways wrong. .....roll that one around in your head for a while.....People that do not question themselves are fools not worth spending time on imo. Half of the fun of modelbuilding is the problem solving needed to complete the task...think of crappy directions as more fun.

It is a frustrating kit to build at times and I had the most issues with he turret as well. Stick at it, you'll get there in the end and as Maus45 said use reference photos ifin doubt. It does build into a very nice model and a very cool looking tank and I felt a real sense of achievement when I finished mine. I still have get around to weathering and detailing it but thats beside the point. [:-]
