The hellcat suffered a few mechanical failings but has been rebuilt and managed to turn the tide a bit at the last DAK battle. New HL gearboxes, a stiffened lower hull, and internal wiring mods now make it a lethal little tank destroyer.

Really need to update builds more often! Rebuilt the elevation and traverse to make this guy really slick. Rebuilt the front end for more structure and cosmetic durability. I confess to adding a new emitter (San Diego) style to make it a true tank destroyer. More to follow!

Nice 'cat - do you have any pictures of the recoil and elevation set up? I need to get mine working, but as its likely going to have an MF-02 in it, it will have to be a servo driven by a channel mix on the radio.
(Unless anyone knows of a gizmo that will take the Tamiya recoil starting signal and trigger a servo cycle..?)

I have the board (thanks Nick!) and I have made it work with my M36 project using a Pershing DMD/MFU board. My real question to you (and Tankhobby aka Nick) is can it be hacked to work with an old Tamiya Sherman DMD/MFU that has no recoil port? I typically use cheaper radios so complex mixing is out. I want to add recoil to my Chaffee/Hellcat/Shermans that run the old guts..... Ideas?

Try running power to the board and use the signal from the flash to trigger the recoil. Not sure if that will work or not. I hope someone with more electronics knowledge than me (I have none really) can answer that or give another suggestion.

The flash voltage is too high! It might work the first few times but eventually could blow the board. Triggering off the IR LED will work. All you need is a positive pulse to trigger it (but not too high a voltage like the flash unit).

The right value resistor off the flash pulse would be the solution for that scenario. Though, im a bit rough with ohms law on calculating the voltage drop taking into account the current value.
IR positive lead soudns like a viable plan.
Who will be the first to make the howitzer recoil?

I have listened to the unofficial poll suggested for my next build last week and have redoubled my efforts to get a new M18 Hellcat running on our field. Until then, the old one has seen a fair amount of use and abuse so it is time do the work to get it running again in advance of my 3D printing effort. Two is always better than one!
The old Hellcat has always been a cosmetic conversion with some external detailing so allow mw some artistic license in the rework. This one only has to look good from 10 feet away! In the last few years I have made the effort to print a new one but those efforts have not worked out very well except for a few parts here and there. I made the decision to remove the basic dust jacket the original builder included to simplify his project and make the actual rotor shield and mantlet. These parts came from a solid Hellcat model that I enlarged off thingiverse from a gaming model. Today's effort is to fix that and add some components from the Tamiya parts bin and Andys 76mm Easy Eight. I also decided to flesh out the loaders position with spare M36 parts and card stock. I know its supposed to have 9 rounds but forgive me for now!

Work done on incorporating the M1A1 76m from the Andy's HHQ Korean Easy 8. I know it is painful to watch me going away detail to make it workable but don't worry, I have another!
During this evolution I decided to use the metal barrel from the AHHQ because..... it looks good......
Emitter will now go in the mantlet gun sight. Looks good so far!
