Default Spektrum dx5e help!

I'm new to the RC tank world and built my first Tamiya Panther G. I bought the Spektrum DX5E transmitter with the AR500 receiver. I have gotten everything to work properly following the setup including main gun and machine gun with exception of the tank driving forwards and back with the left stick. If I press the left stick all the way up, the tank engine dies and then restarts. Could someone help this tank dummy out with this problem?

Yes, common issue would be the battery is too low and this is simulating the tank running out of fuel. Charge  replace the battery in the tank.and try it again.</p>

Yellowshaker - Thanks for the prompt reply. I don't think this is the issue however. Every other function works correctly. I can drive the tank around in circles using the right stick, but the left stick does nothing when pressed up or down. The left stick works correctly for turning the turret. I should preface this by saying that the left stick is not an auto return to neutral stick like the right. I'm not sure if this is an issue? The tank only shuts down when the left stick is pressed up all the way. I might try to recharge the battery again if you are correct.

Well, normally, I have my tanks set up to run driving controls on one stick, while turret functions are on the other. However, I cannot see why this would cause you to have any trouble. What size or capacity battery are you running in the tank? It may have enough power to perform some functions, but not enough to pull it under a alot of load, causing it to shut down.

NiCD Battery Pack - 7.2V 1700 mAh

I appreciate your help and patience. Much of this is still Greek to me.

OK, that pack has very little power, especiall for a tamiya tank running a DMD and MFU. I am not saying it won't work, just that you will have little run time with it. I suggest recharging it and trying the tank again. If this does not work, let us know and we can go further, but I think this is your trouble. Try to get yourself a good pack. Maybe 3800 or over mHA. You can fund deals on ebay or search allbatterypack.com. Let me know if the recharge helps.

Much appreciated. I just wanted to make sure I didn't do anything incorrectly during the setup. I'll try recharging the battery pack first to test and replacing it. If I continue to have trouble I'll be back for some more troubleshooting. You mentioned that you have all the turret functions on one stick and all movement on the other. I just followed the standard Tamiya instructions. If I want to follow your lead would I just switch the channels in the receiver?

Yes, simply switch the lines to the reciever and that's all...

Default RE: Spektrum dx5e help!

I bought a much larger battery pack (5000 mAH) and I'm still having trouble. I think it is either a problem with transmitter setup or a problem with my motor installation (I installed the Impact 3.1 gear ratio and metal tracks). It appears that my right side tracks spin a little faster than the left causing the tank to turn slightly when driving forwards and reverse. Also when I hold the stick to the left the tank turns appropriately (left side stops while right turns), but when I turn to the right it does nothing and that's when the tank sound engine winds down and restarts. Any ideas for troubleshooting?

Did you break in the new gearboxes? Have you used a piece of typing paper between the gear and pinion gear to set the proper lash? Is one side of your tracks harder to move than the other side? Check all of this out also.

If this is a Tamiya DMD you may need to adjust the motor setting its a screw on the top of the DMD called rud to balance the motors .

Thanks for all the help fellas. Turns out that I'm just a big dummy and it was the rudder adjustment on the DMD. I suppose I'll chalk this one up as a rookie mistake. Speaking of mistakes; in all my excitement of getting the motor to run properly, I frayed the wire to the machine gun. Guess I'll be looking for a replacement piece :-( AT least I finally got the tank running!

I might see if I can fix it. I cut one of the wires in half. I had the top open testing the motor and the wire got caught in the gear and chewed it right in half. It was just a stupid mistake on my part.

Splice in a new section of wire by soldering and cover with heat shrink. It will be as good as new.

If you have not converted your DX5e to self centering on both sticks here is how I did it back in 2009 .
