vstank speed reduction

hello all, i have a vstank king tiger. I love it ,but the dang tank drives like its a corvette. is there a way to reduce voltage to the motors as a cheap fix? other wise i will just shoehorn some better stuff in it. thanks.

The one drawback of the 1/24 scale tanks, is that no one seems to make aftermarket mods for them, and therefore there are few mods to discuss

Well, you could lower the voltage a bit I think by using rechargeable batteries. 1.2V as opposed to 1.5V of non rechareable perhaps. The other thing is alot of work but it has worked for me on a 1/24 Nashorn I am building from scratch. If you can get your hands on a forces of valor parts tank and remove the control board soldered to the motors and resolder on the vs motors it will provide poportional control and the king tiger should be able to to almost a crawl. Don't use the FOV motors and gear box as they are not as tough as the VStank motors.

You can try resistors, or diodes. One method mentioned a while ago was to add two diodes in line witheach motor. That would knock the voltage down a bit, you can even add 4 if necessary. Remember the motors are reversable so the diodes need to be inparallel (anode to cathode) so current can flow in both directions. For resistors either place a low resistance resistor in series with the motors or place a high wattage one in parallel to steal some of the power away from the motors (although it will get hot & waste power).
I don't know what voltage levels are usedto drivethe VS motors, I don't have one opened up right now. For the diodes my guess is you can use ones with 1 amp rating or better. The "PIV" of the diode is not a concern, these are operating on low voltages. The resistors would need to be higher wattage, not sure about the values but they would be low, maybe a couple of ohms.

maybe plug 2 pots on the motors so you can adjust the speed as you like? the only thing is, they would have to be at the same resistance or one side would be faster than the other...

They would need to be the type used for crossovers or speaker volume control in that it should be low resistance and high power. But to fit them in the 1/24 may be an issue. Just my thoughts....
