Your Modeling Workspace

The Flat top is a 1/144 scale RC Akagi. Scatch built. The project started when I found some 1/144 scale zeros in a hobby shop in Seattle. I just had to build somthing to put them on.
Here is the other half of the basement.
Just collects dust now as I spend most of my modeling time on tanks now, but this is the YHR, Yellow Head Railway.

Thanks Jeff. I still run them when the young ones stop by for a visit. However when I bought my first Heng Long in about 2006, I fell hard into the tank addiction. When I rebuilt my workshop last spring, it was tailored to tanks. Everything in the drawers is tank related, and all the train modeling stuff was packaged away in plastic totes.
I have a paintboth set up on a mobile rolling work station. It gets rolled into the closet when it is not being used. When I want to airbrush I roll it out of the closet and hook up the vent to I pipe I have vented outside.
My old workshop had a dedicated booth, and there are times I miss that set up. But this current set up give me lots of counter space to spread junk over.

Rex Ross,
C'mon give us the virtual tour! I know I for one would love to see where the master works his craft. Besides I was hoping there would be some more shots of you over the top unbelievable incredibe models for us to salivate over. What do ya say Rex we need some eye candy! Plus I'm betting you have a pretty sweet layout!

Hey ........
Yesterday I started to take a few photos for posting. When I tried to load the photos on this thread I got an error message that said the file was too large. I was loading the photos one at a time, and I gotta figure out a way to do this.
All of the hobby work areas posted so far are absolutely beautiful. A pleasure to look at. Clean, well organized and impressive .......... but youse guys are a bunch of Neat Freaks compared to the junk yard I live in. I'm not sure I want to embarass myself with photographic proof that I am a 7 year old kid in a 74 year old body. I'll try again.
It's never too late to have a happy childhood.

Success! I don't know what I did wrong the first time, or what I did right this time, but here's my main mess. Also is a photo of some of my stash on the good side of my walk-in closet. Mostly 1/35 armor and 1/72 aircraft. The other side of the closet is wasted on clothes. The work area in my garage is a disaster right now, not worth a photo.

Nice RR Dan.
We run the D&RGW down here, the Silverton train. The RR is getting more dusty than the tanks ever get, but it's like my son pointed out...
"Trains just go round and round, but tanks go anywhere you want."
WOW! Rex!
Thanks fot the pictures... I will study them later when I have moretime.

Leonardo painted the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper. My artistic talents are limited to painting the bathroom and kitchen last year. And a model or two.

I try to keep a variety of styrene on hand. I hate it when I am building something and don't have what I need. Since hobby shops are a thing of the past, I can't just jump up and go get it anymore. I have to order it online and wait a week or two before I get it. I really enjoy being able to turn around and grab exactly what I need, when I need it. That makes my hobby fun for me.

Very nice indeed Rex, very nice. You should be proud.
There is that one empty space on the wall of tanks & AFVs... an empty space like that on my tank shelf would sure bother me.
Just sayin'.

Damn Rex,
That right there is a true modeler's home! Your workshop is as impressive as your models (well almost). Guess it stands to reason the place with the most magic would create the most fantastic things. That right there is the happiest place on earth, Disneyland ain't got nothin on you! (LOL) Just saying!
Man Plastruct's gotta love you! Just be careful or the guys over at Evergreen may catch wind of this and pay you a visit!
Truly great stuff, proving once again why you are the MASTER!

~~~~~~~~~~
It's the home of a modeler who has been doing models for about 69 years now, has been retired for 12 years, lives alone, doesn't have a job, wife, kids, relatives, pets, a yard to take care of, and all of the other stuff that a normal person has to deal with every day. With the cost of everything these days, I can't afford to leave the house unless I have $20 in my pocket.....and that's just for gas and bridge tolls!. Sooooo, when I wake up in the morning I have three things I look forward to...... A cup of coffee, a trip to the bathroom, and the fun of hobby activities. I deal with real life when necessary.
That space ain't empty. I used that new Digital Stealth Camo paint on that tank. I did a good job didn't I ? That new paint formula also reflects infra red and radar detection. I can't wait to try it out at the next Kellys Heroes battle day.
I got a PM that jokingly asked me for the formula for the Digital Stealth Camo paint.
OK .... the formula for that Digital Stealth Camo paint is as follows;
1 pint of acrylic flat rainbow primer. Plaid primer can be substituted.
1 ounce of DNA extracted from the saliva of a Cape Dwarf Chameleon from Southern Madagascar.
Place both in a blender and select puree speed for 5 seconds ..... Done!
Apply paint with a Q tip or tooth pick. Happy painting!
Jeff,
If you keep every toy you ever get your hands on, you will end up the same way. I am an incurable collector.
When my wife went to the hospital to give birth to our first child, I decided to build a model airplane while she was in the hospital. That was a three day stay back then. I still have that airplane.
My daughter celebrated her 54th birthday on February 22nd..........
Things change with time and location. At the SC Military Museum I had a nice setup albeit work bench was an old display case turned around, and tasked with building 1;35 & 1;48 dioramas and display models....but I had working space...and a budjet. At home, my workbench has to suffice as a woodwind instrument repair shop, oboe reedmaking desk and model shop. Musical activities have cut my model building way back. But instead of paying, I am paid. Works out OK.
Wow... I would get lost in a shop that big, the wife would report me missing then find me days later when she started to fill the space with her stuff.
No CNC machine yet, I'll need to get a new job first. I was looking into 3D printers, that will need to wait also...
The intent was to have as much room as possible when we built the house so the basement matches the house's floor plan (single floor contemporary ranch). The builder gave great advice when he said to have 8 foot ceilings would only cost more in cement as they had to put up the forms anyway, so 6ft vs 8 ft forms didn't really matter. Worked out great! Only regret is there's no bathroom down there.
