Default Pershing question

Hi Everyone,
I am currently doing up my Tamiya pershingin the B12 livery, My question is was the muzzle break the same as the kit one or was it the smaller type one that had the expansion chamber behind it. Sorry if Ihave any of the terminology wrong........

Cheers Ken

The Pershing was equipt with a large, double baffle muzzle brake. By "Expansion chamber" (?) believe you refer to the bore evacuator or fume extractor behind the single baffle muzzle brake on the later M-26A1 and M-46. The Pershing's gun was called a "single shot gun" due to the amount of dust kicked up by the hige mizzle brake, obscuring vision for a second shot. Due to the size of the 90mm shell casing with so much propellent, much of the burning residue was in the bore when the breechblock dropped, and flashed into the turret. A Pershing loader often had no eyebrows and a "sunburned " face. The Pershing's 90mm gun was modified by cutting the muzzle brake to single baffle to cut down on the back blast of dirt and the bore evacuator installed to cut down on the fumes. This was renamed M-26A1....same setup on the M-46. As the projectile leaves the gun, it creates a vacum in the bore evacuator which had angled holes into the bore. The vacuum would suck the fumes in until the pressure equalized and fumes exited out the muzzle. Hope this helps.

Here's my M26A1.

I DID cut down the kits muzzle brake and purchased the Elite Armor barrel, but I do not believe anyone is making that anymore.

I did not put the turnbuckles for the fenders on as I used to battle, and they would have been knocked off.

here's the diff; M-26 vs M-46. M-46 and M-26A1 turrets were identical. Late 46 and 46A1 had the stowage turret basket removed.
Some M-46s converted from Pershings at TOD for Korea retained them.

that's weird with the stars on the fenders first time i have seen that, did they ever do that or is this just something they decided to do to this Pershing

The tank with the stars on the fenders is the M46, but this is a gate guard so anything is possible.

That's museum BS. Many of the bumper numbers are incorrect and I have been trying to correct them, but there are so many screwed up regulations in military museums, that it's it hard to get anything done. The M-46 has USA on the muffler shield, which wouldn't be there for an hour of running and the spare tracks are backwards. Many museum employees don't have a clue about most of the artifacts. Some museums have the model number on one fender and year on the other, which looks lots better than the idiotic stars, but still a unit ID and company number would would look more appropriate. [:-]

The M-46 sits by an admininistrative training building where hardly anyone sees it. It was used as a training tank right after the korean War by a NG unit in Washington state. It also has the pistol port welded up, which is highly unusual. The 46 has the same driving controls as the M-47 which replaced it and since is has dual controls which were deleted in the 47, it was good for driver training. The morons welded ALL hatches shut, so we can't even get in to maintain it. Regs require the loader's hatch to be accessable but padlocked. A few months ago, the Bow Gunner's escape hatch dropped out due to the holding rods rusting through and it's still laying in the museum in spite of emergency hazard warnings requesting it be tack welded in place. Our M-5A1 Stuart has the entire bottom rusted out under the turret and now has a patch of wire fence welded to the botttom, blocking the huge hole. That's military museums and priority on budgets. .[:@]

I remember that M48A2's often had small stars on the back fenders, though not always.

You will see that on many museum artifacts, rarely if ever on active duty gear although I have seen a couple NG Humvees with such subdued markings. Geneva Convention states that stars (national ID) are suposed to be on the front plate, both sides of the turret, rear of the turret OR rear hull plate and turret top..upper point facing rear. Many display items will have stars on the track guards (fenders) just to have something there. Some curators are not willing to put unit markings on some artifacts so not to slight other local units that had the same gear. Modern warfare seems to have changed a lot and it rare to see a tank in the middle east with any markings other than tactical unit ID and some Arabic slogans.....sorta like WW II Russian tanks heading for Germany.

On that M-46, the star should be on the blower housing and unit markings normally on the fenders or on the bow below the headlamps, as with the M-26..
