That is a beaut!

We sadly need a very affordable German half track.

I know I'll be going for bust on the Blitz.

Well I might as well throw mine in the trash! That's looking real good.

Will you also look into making the smaller 250 version?

Way cool,

I agree I could toss my 1/16 251/22 Pakwagon in favor as well if wern't for the investment.

Hehe well with luck there will be at least 2 more 21st Century 1/18 Sdkfz 251's zipping around in the near future to continue the legacy :P

Did you use 1/24 tracks and sprocket on yours Merle? I don't have that particular build thread handy, but it looks awesome.

No actually I used HL Panz3 tracks on both my 1/16 scale and my 1/18th scale 251s

Sorry The 251/17 Flak is really a rebuild of my 1/18th 251/22, I added a pic of it with the panz 3 tracks.

My Thanks,

The center pic is a 1/16 scale Resin kit of a 251D that I converted to a RC Pakwagen with a modified early El Mod tank setup,
so is fully combat functional. The first pic is my 251C/17 flak, the hull is from a scaled up card model. was 1/25 scale I enlarged it to 1/16 scale.

I then used all the running hardware from my 1/18th 251 to complete it, the 20mm gun is a verlinden kit.

one can see the vid on youtube.

The biggest thing needed is a working electronics system with Tamiya compatible IR designed with the german halftracks in mind.

nobody does that...yet, I dont have the resources.

I used a modified El Mod, others have used Tamiya electronics.

My setup is a one time custom done by the gentlemen at El Mod at my request several years ago, I'm not even sure they would be willing to create another such mod. They do have a electronics board for the FAMO, but does not have the ability to use their combat board, I asked already.

but anything else I do has to be cobbled together and that takes up space and is prone to break downs.

The Halftracks are the easy part.

I've inquired with Clark about doing a couple custom boards with PnzIV sounds for the PAK40 variants, with the major change being servo outputs for both gun elevation and pivoting. It is possible to go all out with proper engine sounds but I don't require that.

Hey Strato,

I thought I should explain the electronics and the way I got my 251 half tracks to work like the full scale one.
First you prolly already are aware how a 251 series steers with both the front wheels and tracks in concert.
so that being the idea I had a El-Mod tank drive module modified to allow the use of a steering servo for the front wheels.
next I fiddled with a rc xmtr ail/rud mix function to get the proper steering/track function.

see the links below: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNdaB...96455&index=21

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCAcB...94F65472F96455

Now if Clark can help with this I'm in for sure as I'm sure others would be also.

Regards,

Bullyhys

hi

i have done some test with a halftrack, i want to see how it works with only one Motor and an standart axis out of the crowler market. The idea was to find a relativly chaep and workable funktional Drive setup.

this was my test objekt. The main gear is made out of one standart plastik gearbox.

im diving it with one 11,1v lipo and tis vehicle do have unbelivable much power.

using it as battery and airplay carrier :-).

here you can see how it drives with this set up.

I'll either use a 5 (or 6) channel receiver and mix the other channel in with some exponential, or just use a y-splitter as a few other people have for steering. I'll experiment and see what I can manage.

Chris that is really cool :P

Hello Chris,

Very Nice work!

I shall have to give it a try myself...it would make a 251 or a 250 series much easier to accomplish.

Kind Regards

I think I'll pursue a custom Clark board... we'll see!
Updates!

SO, much to Stince & my chagrin, the fellas at rc toy bay neglected to tell me that they were out of stock on the VS Tank gearboxes I had ordered... for 2-1/2 months. Wow. I promptly got my money back. AFAIK their website still lists them as in-stock.

Next, in near desperation I ordered 4x of the micro gearmotors from Servo City ... they fit and seem powerful, and very, very small. The shipment arrived yesterday. Straight out of the box, 2 of the 4 motors simply. Dont. Work. My head nearly exploded.. ><

Anyhoo, I'm in the midst of dealing with Servo City for a return.. also talking to 35rctank.com to see if their small gearbox will fit, AND.. I found another online retailer for VStank gearboxes...

These things are a headache, lol.. wish us luck

Hey guys, some good news!

Ordered a pair of Tiger gearboxes from VsTank directly, and they arrived here in just over a week. Very good price and NO shipping charges... say whaat? Awesome find.

Much to my delight they fit in really nicely. I hacked up the plastic hull to get them in, and bingo almost ready to rock. The motor connectors are the same type used by Clark, bonus.

The road wheels are attached to side plates that I unscrewed and pried off. This came in handy both for mounting the gearbox & later on, as I may have to adjust how far outward the wheels are to fit the slightly wider drive wheel profile of the transmission. I'll end up having wider tracks & a wider road footprint which should help with steering & avoid rollovers!

I did some more work, got the tracks installed without a single issue. Test fit various internal layouts and what works best is the Clark board in the rear, speaker up front and a 1700mAh 7.2v battery wedged in between. It all fits perfectly, even with the big gun mount in the way.

I did some more work on the front steering & suspension, and even went a LITTLE crazy (Im a engineer so.. we do that..) added my own leaf springs! It slightly pushes the wheels onto the ground and keeps them from rubbing on the fenders. Works perfect.

I love these Mods. I have two waiting myself. Could you guys discuss the disassembly process. along with the pics already posted. With the cost of these halftracks climbing, I surley don't want to ruin one.

Thanks for sharing.

Jim, the scariest part of disassembly is popping off the side plates, the pieces that looks like storage bins. There are no screw heads or access points, and they are basically glued to the sides. You have to use a small flat head screwdriver and pry them off. I didn't damage mine, and they actually pop right back into the mounting holes they came out of, no glue required.

Once that is done you can access the 5 screws underneath the top hull that hold together top and bottom. The whole thing has different detail parts that are held together with what I guessed was MEK, so they pry apart rather easily and without damage. Just be patient.

The front axle and wheels drop right out & are held in by a single screw under the engine hood. You have to take off the top hull to reach it.

I didn't want to try any harder to remove the road wheels, they are REALLY in there... so I just pried off the entire wheel plate as pictured. Everything else including where the drive sprockets were mounted I cut away with a dremel to mount my gearbox.

Strato50,
Thanks so much. While it looked complicated in the pics, your tutorial makes it all sound quite easy. So long as one of those glue monkeys didn't assemble mine, I think I should be able to disassemble mine just as well. Thanks for sharing and a very interesting thread. Would love to see some vids.

Jim
