Default ZTZ 99 conversion

I was having a slight case of buyer remorse when I got my ZTZ 99 recently. That told me I really wanted the ZTZ 99A. I started to think about what the difference between the two were. I was happy to see that maybe I could convert my 99 to a 99A with just a few scratch built detail items, that could be installed without doing any modifications to the 99. This is what was involved.

1. The glacis got an overlay plate of the composite armor blocks.

2. The front of the turret could get an angular type nose job add on.

3. The bar armor on the sides of the turret could also be changed to armor blocks.

It all worked out. Now I just hope I can come up with a decent camo paint match.

Looks great so far, Rex. I hope you'll post any paint numbers or brands or whatever you come up with, as that would be very useful info. You already know I just got a 99A.

Awwww Sheeeesh ----- Now ya tell me !!! Got photos of yours?

I spent the morning attempting to mix paint that matched the colors on my ZTZ 99 so I could paint my 99A conversion parts. It's amazing how paint can slightly change its' shade when viewed under incandescent light, or fluorescent light, or LED light, or a flash light, or daylight. I think it may not look too bad under moon light.

Uh yeah sorry Rex. I would have thought that was pretty common knowledge by now. The 99 has been around a little while now so not many posts about it. I got mine conversion parts from ForgeBear and i did a full Tamiya conversion using a KV 1 set up. It works really well in the 99. Still need to get some faster motors in it, will probably use a set of speed 400's maybe even 480's. i don't want to knock down the gear ratio too much though that is why i'm just going to do motors. Also want to get the traverse speed up with a faster small motor. saw a guy use 250 motors in a Tamiya set up but i think ill have to find a faster flat frame motor to use the HL traverse gear box.
i will have to get some new pictures of it, haven't done anything with the paint. Just so you know the actual green they use is a little darker than the HL and the yellow is a little more yellow than HL if you want to be accurate with the colors.

Have you tried the black capped motor from an airsoft unit? I'm told they are faster than the stock HL turret motor.

I recently acquired a defective ZTZ 99 for under $50,- and wanted to convert it to the 99A.
Is there someone else that sells these composite armor blocks? I can't find them at Forge Bears Ebay shop.

As far as i know he was the only one selling them. someone else made them so there must be someone out there selling them, you may try to get on the UK forum and see if anyone there knows where else they can be bought.
I think the forum name is RCTankWarfare but i cant remember , been a while since i was here. I believe Ex-Pat-Tanker visits there maybe he can fill in the blanks for us.
Did you contact Forge Bear directly from his Ebay Shop. Should be able to contact seller through Ebay.

As far as I know that was only a limited time deal, but by all means contact him and see what he can do for you.

When I look at the prices of some of those parts I wonder why I scratch build some things. Then I look at the shipping costs ..............

That front glacious plate is only part of the set. Still need to find the turret armor and stowage rack armor, do they list those parts also? I was able to get mine in one complete set, seems they\re going to nickle and dime you on this if they broke up the set.

That's a really good source. I want to pick up a couple of the plastic exhausts for the Panzer III and IV and experiment with them, and at just a couple bucks each it's easy to do. Naturally the free shipping by e-packet is a major selling point. I think I bought a couple MG-42s for my PIIIs from another AliExpress vendor and they were only ten bucks each with free shipping. I just don't always know who to trust on AliExpress. So far I like Jack Wang and Bao Dan. Had good results with both. Has anyone actually ordered from the heng long store? Does anyone know if they're really heng long or if that's just the name of the store and it's run by someone other than heng long?

Well im glad they selling it as the set. Would hate to see them break it up and charge 10 bucks for each piece,Seen it done before. Looks like a good site too.

Did you order the set for the 99 or the 99A? I think they're the same set, but I just picked up a 99A and I didn't get the external fuel tanks and it had different brackets (sprue "E"). With lots of help from Rex I'm scratchbuilding fuel tanks for it. Got the tanks done, now I have to do the straps and buckles. Does anyone know what those straps are made of on the real tanks? With those buckles it almost looks like they might be heavy duty canvas or nylon like they use for tow straps. And of course they might be steel. Never know til ya ask, eh?

This is what I got for sprue "E" and you can see the brackets are different.

Actually Maus they have a set that includes all the sprues, that is the one i ordered. There are about 6 total sprues in all i think and that set they offer is the complete sprue set for the 99/99A
