Work on my project is going well, i had another thread going about my measuring out of the tank plates, but that issue is solved now and i am now creating a more official page for the project itself. I will need some help with the construction of this vehicle from the more experienced of you, and would be grateful for any information.

So, first question, the real tank had a top speed of 8km/h and i will therefore need a gearbox, or need to make a gearbox, that will fit within the small vehicle, and electronics that u suggest?

clark makes some small boards for use in 1/35 scale, or the panda hobby 35t, look at those


as for gearbox, maybe the generic tamiya hobby gearboxes?

Thanks for the assistance Panther F!! (That's my favorite panther model btw) I am planning on making an all metal m1917, and don't think I will be getting this model, but your link and info has helped me a ton! Now I can know how I may set up the electronics in my tank and give me ideas as to what I need to make in my tank so that the electronics will fit well! I appreciate this help so much!

Thank you so much Martellus! This is exactly the type of info I was looking for! I think I might go with the low speed ones, as the tank was not that fast, and the sizes of the motor+gearbox combos are the perfect width for my vehicle!

Todays update:
I worked more on measuring the unlabeled blueprints of the M1917 and nearly have the entire back end of the tank, panel wise, blueprinted to 1/16th scale. I would post up some photos of the blueprints, although I am planning to keep these a secret at the moment in case someone wants to buy a m1917 off of me if more than my own are wanted. It is really starting to come together and I expect to be able to start building in about a week or two at this rate

Yeah, I realize you're not working with a kit OR that this is the US M1917 but the two vehicles are fairly similar in size so I thought the build thread would be another idea to look at.

For my FT-17 I have a Tamiya Item Number 70097-840 gearbox installed but haven't decided on electronics. Having a partial interior to see is where I'm at right now and electronics are still not ready.

Update: back half plates of vehicle have been measured fully and converted to 1/16 scale and i have put them into the blueprints Now for the front. I will need to do some serious brainstorming on the track system on each side of the vehicle, especially the track tensioners and suspension. I put up a visitors message on Heavyaslead's profilex but have yet to recieve any info. His documentation on converting his static model to rc was fantastic, yet i was hoping to get sone more details on where he would suggest getting some of the supplies for the suspension system.

Yeah i keep looking at his photos to figure out where he got some of the parts of the track system. I get some were from a old tractor model, but i am concerned about all the other parts besides idler wheel and gear for guiding tracks. I am more concerned about the smaller guiding wheels and tensioner. The gearbox i have figured out what i will do and the motors come with it.

In regards to photos, i hope you dont find them boring as i will be posting lots tommorow. They are mostly of my calculations, there are tons, and blueprints. I will most likely begin cutting put the parts from metal within a week. That will be documented all by film for you guys to see.

Update: I have completed measuring out nearly the entirety of the hull of the m1917 and put it down to 16th scale. I then bought some thick card stock today that mimics the thickness of the metal i will be using to make the final product. I began to redraw out the shapes of the plates on this thicker material so that i may make the entire tank out of cardstock first, to ensure that my measurements are accurate and that the parts will mesh well once i put them down on metal material.

Looks good... an M1917 would be an interesting twist to the FT. Did you ever make contact with Eric on his running gear material/construction?

That's a nice table you're working on there. I'm looking at all the local flea markets for one as a coffee table version (shorter) for my media room. May have to cut one down instead.

I will have the space for multiple projects once I am finished reorganizing the mission room I can start back on my FT.

Thanks for the compliment on the table! Yeah, I don't really have a designated location to do my work, so i just spread out my station on whatever free spaces there are in the house when everyone else isn't using it lol. In a bizarre twist, I just so happen to be taking a trip to virginia with my dad, and we are going to be stopping off at the AAF museum on the way to Norfolk to look at their tank collection, which consists of a M1917!! I will be filing my camera with photos of it to help me and others on this forum for future reference, along with any other tanks people might end up modeling.

Update: I have completed measuring out and converting about 90 percent of the tank when not considering the turret. As you will see in this picture, i have completed the most important part, the base of the tank. After completing the measuring of the small lower glacis plate, drivers port plate, and two side plates of the lower glacis. I will have completed the measurement of everything, but the turret. I expect to have these 3 parts done by tommorow. Then, I will begin cutting out the thick card stock parts so to test my measurements before moving on to the fabrication of the metal tank. I sent a message to HeavyAsLead, or as some of you may know by Eric, and I'm waiting for a response as to some certain details on his track system.

Update: I begun yesterday, before I left to go to Virginia to see AAF museum, to cut out the parts I drew up out of cardstock so that I may test my measurements. So far, the parts are fitting together perfectly and I have only had to readjust two parts, and now they fit perfectly. I expect to have the full cardstock tank, besides the turret, completed by sunday.

Update: I visited the Danville AAF Museum and got to see the wonderful m1917!! I got some pictures here from the museum, most of which are of that tank, and also some other interesting photos. I talked to the owner of the museum and he let me get up close to take some photos of the suspension and where it connects to the hull, which will be very useful for recreation of the drive system, which i already have some ideas for getting parts for! Anyways here are my photos from the museum!!
