KW battlefield update...
And so, the work continues as we build toward the big weekend in Sept.
This post is going to be a long one with lots of pics so sit back and enjoy...
I can't say enough about my partner in crime Ed, or knispel as he is known on the forum.Without him this project would just be too much for me. The man spent 4 hours today weed whacking the entire field. He handled that weed whacker like a surgeon! But the results are spectacular as you can see here below.
Also Ed made the most awesome telephone poles to go on the field and brought his big concrete bit to drill holes. We will be working on stringing the lines in the next few weeks.
Here is a shot of the tunnel completed with stone framing courtesy of Derek...
I have been making sandbags and concrete bunkers. The bunkers out of plastic take out containers. They don't look too bad...
And the V-1 launch ramp will be under construction next week and in the meantime 3 rockets are being built...
And last I leave this for you guys to guess what is being built here...

Looks good. Is it going to be a Fountain?

Very nice!
I like the use of plastic pipe to do the tunnel. Very clever. It will keep the tanks from going off course and rubbing on the tunnel sides. Safer for the tanks, and faster to drive through with confidence.
As for the plastic take out containers, I think you were joking, because I did not see any plastic take out containers. If they are in the pictures, you did a great job hiding them, the bunker and sandbags look very good. The telephone poles are a nice added detail too.
You guys should be proud of all that work and inspiration.

Wow this is looking really good!
I also too have the problems of it not showing the pictures. Fixed if I open in new tab or window (scroll wheel press down if you got it) but still annoying. It is part of that new "upgrade" we got a bit ago with the new forums.

Funny I have no problems, I just click on the pic and it opens right up. Mind you the rest of the screen goes black around the picture. Not a gun emplacement but you are getting warmer...

Is the concrete ring the V-2 launch site? Yes, I know the V-1 is pictured and uses a rail system, but you said "rockets" and a V-2 launches vertically. You guys building any V-2s also?
My second guess is that it's a fire ring for cooking burgers and brats.

Wow. That is coming along great. Wish we had a permanent battlefield here in san diego but we use an open vacant field in the waterfront park. We have to be careful we dont get kicked out by the rangers. Always leave it cleaner than we found it.

Pah co chu puk you win the cookie! Yes, it is going to be V-2 launch site to go with the V-1 launcher we are building. I have had a rocket for a while although Gary won't recognize it anymore...
Rich, do what we did. See where your local R/C air guys fly and they may have some room for you. Or a local gun club. They usually have some vacant room too. Having 3 or 4 things going on in an area just creates good energy and draws more and more people out. We already have had at least 6 or 7 new members since we started building this thing... :-)

Yep, it's a great start and coming together in a group effort makes it all!
It'll only get better I'm sure.

Pah co chu puk you win the cookie!
Sadly however, I can't foresee a trip up that way any time soon, so please enjoy the cookie for me. Cookies should never go to waste.
You have me looking at all sorts of odd things now thinking of how they might be used as a concrete form for a battlefield prop. I'm going to use the big plastic pipe idea for tunnels in my Tankland, thanks for that one. I have learned developing Tankland that "wheel guards" or curbs, on bridges help keep the tanks on course and prevent scrapes from the tank sides rubbing on the guardrail. The round smooth shape of the pipe is a natural wheel guard in the tunnel.
Some other things I've learned building Tankland:
- Asphalt roof shingles laid up side down will make a quick, durable, scale looking, paved road. They also prevent weeds in the roadways. Mine have survived deep snow. I have only paved the village streets, the rural areas are still dirt roads.
- Ants are a pain in the a$% when they dig a colony in your battlefield. Diatomasious earth under the buildings and roads helps a lot. You can get it at a garden supply. It's non-toxic.
- Cinder blocks make quick, simple, durable, all weather buildings that work well for an outdoor battlefield. Plywood roofs dress them up nicely.
- A good way to maintain or "dress" the road system is to make a drag sled out of a cut off from a big wood beam that is as wide as the roads and sheathed in expanded metal mesh. I pull mine with a rope and the metal mesh chops and grinds the weeds, while the wood block grades the dirt. It's much less work than using a hoe or a rake. I have about 300 meters of scale roadways I grade that way.
Please check out my web page (link below) and scroll down to the Abrams movie, Dragon on Patrol, it gives a nice tour of Tankland, both the village and the outer provinces. I went with a desert / Mediterranean look.

Springman - no, not functional LOL! However, I have a fuel truck coming to put beside the V-2 so the plan is to put a Tarr smoker in it and run a smoke line inside the V-2 so at least smoke is coming out the bottom...
Phordman - It is Sept. 8,9,10, it is Canada's largest R/C aircraft show as well. That is the main event. I will put an official announcement up this weekend with attachments and directions. For the airshow it is $7.00 per day and for our event it will be $25.00 to play all weekend. And that's Canadian! :-)
