Question Alu tape to protect nylon gearboxes from dirt coming in. Too much heat build up?

Alu tape to protect Heng Long nylon gearbox from dirt
I put strong yet flexible alu tape around my gearboxes to protect dirt from coming in. Where I drawed the red v line I did not cover the the gearbox in order to let in air to cool the nylon gear wheels.

My question is: the nylon gears will get hot when driving, the more so with the alu isolating it. Is my construction o.k. enough to prevent the nylon gear wheels from heat build up? My usage is about three hours a week, ratio slow speed driving/ high speed driving is 60:40. No IR battling.

The gearbox is the standard Heng Long with nylon gear wheels, motors are the Taigen 380 motors. (I removed the Taigen steelbox, my copy was defective). The tank is a Heng Long Leopard 2a6.

An interesting article from a plastic gear manufacturer can be find here: https://www.machinedesign.com/mechan...stics-get-gear
As always thanks for any input!

Sealing your gearboxes shouldn't matter at all. The upcoming gearboxes from Waltersons are actually sealed even more so than yours.

I just use a strip of sheet styrene to make a splatter shield to keep grease from getting all over and it works out fine. Never had any issues with dirt getting in there. I think I've even got a video on how I make the splatter shields.

This ^^^^^^ .

Also with those 380 motor you will not overheat your nylon gears as long as they are properly greased. They will strip out long before they melt. When you have a chance dump those gearboxes and get a proper set of Taigen 3:1or 4:1 gearboxes with 390 motors. (3:1 are my preferred for a modern fast tank)

Sealing the gearbox is a common practice, in industry. No heat issues there

Be cautious covering the MOTOR vent holes, as this heat build up will lessen the life of your motor.

The 390 motors will be next. The nylon gears works surprisingly well on my tank. Reading various treads nylon does not need to be greased it's kind of self greasing. All I did was putting a bit of graphite on it.

I would caution running the 390 motors with stock nylon gears, the gears will not last long. Especially as the tank becomes heavier as more metal upgrades are added.

[QUOTE=Fsttanks;12535272]

The 390 motors are good, but I did have a Taigen 3:1 gearbox and it was bad from the beginning. I rather want to look for another one. I will check out with a local dealer. (I finally found some in The Netherlands)

I did see them in another tread. For me the alu tape works very good, easy to apply, covers nearly the whole gears and very strong. That's a nice thing in rc world everyone has his own mods.

Thanks for your input, I took care not to cover the motors.

Erik how is the quality of the new Watersons? The old ones were bad: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/rc-t...gearbox-2.html

True, I like your original approach to chassis bracing as well, can you please show more pictures of that?

It's made of alu u profile, a big pvc L profile and the green girder behind is a pvc girder. Plus two plastic balks to reinforce backside plate. I am planning to put a sheet of 2mm alu plate on the back underside of the tank to reinforce the gears area.

Heng long Leopard 2 reinforced hull.
