The difference is just less run time? Or are there any other shortcomings?

I also wonderd if the Y harness could be removed and two Batteries installed as in the Tiger 1.

RE: How many batteries in KT?
The 56017-56018- King Tiger uses one battery and a Y-harness to power the DMD and MF-01. The Tiger uses two batteries, each one connecting directly to the DMD, the other to the MF-01. The batteries are stacked atop each other and zip-tied. You could do the same with the King. And, yes. Run time suffers with one battery. I guess Tamiya was trying not to scare off buyers by saying you would have to purchase two battery packs to get the King going.

RE: How many batteries in KT?
Using two batteries will give a slight increase in run time, however, if these batteries are configured like the Tiger I (one battery for DMD and another for the MF unit) then whichever battery drops out first, the whole tank shuts down. Not the best solution for multiple batteries.
When batteries are connected in parrallel (two batteries together to the DMD and MF simultaneously) a slight increase in run time is available. Again, just like Pro-racing battery packs require, any parrallel connection should be between MATCHED cells since charging and discharging can damage unmatched cells.
One last point to consider, the voltage sustainability of the battery pack is more important than the mah or current draw capability of these battery packs. As voltage drops the DMD or MF unit will lose signal processing and stop or start doing erratic things, even if the cells have plenty of current capability in reserve.
All this to say, a battery pack with reliable voltage sustainability is more important than number of cells.

Eric,
If I got you right, I can use one battery and Y connector on every Tamiya tank, or...
Two batteries joined together + the same Y connector.
Have you any pics of how you did that?
Regards,
Eugene

Hello Eugene
Yes, you are correct. I do not have pics of the battery set-up, I basically wired the two batteries together (black to black and red to red) with a Tamiya plug on the end. This is potentially dangerous as differing voltages in the batteries can back charge or get wires shorted whils assembling can vent a cell!
I would only recommed this configuration if you are comfortable and have a healthy respect for electricity.
In truth, after two years of running dual batteries in the Tiger and King Tiger, while the run time was slightly more the batteries expired earlier (would not hold a charge) than using a single battery, and honestly I found that a battery that can regulate and hold its voltage better was more valuable than adding more parrallel cells for power.

It seems to me that this chap from China (Sunnykids) does not read the topics at all. His replies are out of discussion.
The only thing he's doing is advertising his website.
