Hummel is Finished....
I received the metal upgrade tracks from Tomzag on Friday (THANK YOU!), so the tank is finally finished and ready for battle!
Whew!
I had a few problems with the initial test drive because the center caps for the rear wheels kept backing out and the whole wheel, and subsequently the track, would come off in the grass. [] I tried to epoxy the shaft thingy to the axle thingy (I hate to get so technical, but you know what I mean. ), and it still came off. [:@] Finally, I used CA to glue the center cap to the wheel itself and I have not had a problem. Since the tracks stay in line, the wheel does not move far enough out to come off, anymore. [sm=thumbup.gif]
Mounting the Tamiya Battle System was not easy either, but I finally decided to use a scale wooden barrel (hollowed out for the wires) to use as a base for the mounting bracket. I'm not crazy about the way it looks, but it works. I will have to come up with a metal bracket that attaches to the inside of the armor, snaps out when I need it and folds down out of sight when I don't.
I'm still having problems with the track pins backing out as well, and CA on the ends did not help.
I love it, though!
Jason
PS. The video clips have no plot or point and the driving is remedial, so try to focus on the Hummel and maybe the buildings (from Texas Armor Association battlefield) and not the driving maneuvers. And yes, we all know that the Sherman would have opened fire and wiped out those two German tanks, but this is all just fantasy, ok?!!

Very nice - you have something truly unique there. The XD figures look good too. Where did you get this conversion piece and what is it mounted to?

Congratulations! Are the wheel bogies plastic or metal? How about the sprockets and idler wheels? Very nimle. Gives me an idea what my Panzer IV will turn out like . . . Keep em' rolling!!

RE: Hummel is Finished....
All of the wheels and sprockets are the original plastic parts from the kit.....well, almost all. The return rollers are metal. I think that the plastic wheels will be sturdy enough for normal driving, but one day I might look into replacing them with metal, also.

Keep an eye on your rear idlers. They may be the first to fail Sorry to bring the bad news. If it does go kaput, then call Daryl for a spring loaded idler to prevent track slippage and protect the gear drives when debris gets chewed up between the tracks and suspension. I 'd like to post videos of my work, too. Thanks for the inspiration.

Are there any other operating features to it? Does the gun elevate or is it permanently affixed to the travellock?
Great job regardless--you are a pioneer in this forum. [sm=thumbs_up.gif][sm=thumbs_up.gif]

RE: Hummel is Finished....
Tomzag talked me through some ways to make the barrel elevate and traverse, but I'm too thick-headed to make it work. If I had pictures of some set-ups, then I'm sure that I could do the same, but I cannot seem to figure it out when I sit on my toilet to work.....I guess I am a copy cat, not a pioneer.
Someone post some pictures or links for the cause!!!
Jason
P.S. I do not really sit on the toilet and model tanks.......it is an old joke about my "workbench".

RE: Hummel is Finished....
Elevate yes, but TRAVERSE? I thought it was a fixed mount and to traverse the gun they would pivot the whole chassis. To elevate, wouldn't it suffice to add a simple gear mechanism? Doesn't sound too complicated but with pics, I'm also certain you could do it.
P.S. I don't really think we'd fault you for it if you did. Time spent in there (on the can) is wasted time, IMO...

He even had ideas for gun recoil in the Hummel.
