RE: AEC MKIII SCRATCH BUILD 1/16TH
Im not going with full DMD thats for sure. Might wait and see whats on the horizon. I would much rather have another tank to run rather than just use the electronics from a Sherman. For now, It will just be a runner.
Someone find me a Tamiya compatible battle circuit. I think 1 or 2 hits and this thing should be out. First you need to catch it though.

Watch Ebay you can occasionally get the Tamiya electornics for a "more reasonable" price. ( recently got Pershing DMD and MF for ~$230.00 total.) I am using them in my M41 conversion. I have found the Key to ebay is to be willing to let things go dont get competitive about the bidding.

Started sanding the tire patterns today. The 2 halves will be glued together and set up for elastomer molding (rubber like tires).
Mocked up the location. Rims will be next.
Man this thing looks much better now. Cant wait to see it running.
TIRES ARE NOT FOR SALE...............

Looks Great!!! Very simple and clean. [sm=thumbup.gif]
I guess you have it running for tests etc..........how does it handle, so far? Do you have a limiter of some kind to keep it down to more of a scale speed or is it flat out fast?
Keep the posts coming!

It has a 3:1 gearbox piggy backed to the original layout. The top speed is about double the Pershing. Tons of torque though.

Wheels and tires are in the building stage. Now that the body is separate from the running chassis, I can detail her out completely and test the lower drivetrain without breaking "stuff" off.
Here is a picture for size comparison with my Pershing.
Also, started putting in the rivets and radiator details.
Functional windscreen is also finished. Now it's starting to look like armor
STILL LOOKING FOR A SHERMAN DMD/MFU. PLEASE CONTACT ME IF YOU HAVE A SET FOR SALE.

RE: AEC MKIII SCRATCH BUILD 1/16TH
After about 5 weeks of tire work, The AEC is on its wheels. 2 part elastomer is just about the perfect hardness. Feels just like tire rubber and grips very well. Did some tests and
the tear strength is very good. Now back to details and turret mechanics. The barrel elevation is finished. Now I need to start the rotation. Still looking for a good price on a DMD MFU unit. Any tank would be ok. Tiger/Sherman/Pershing/king
Let me know if you have a set to sell.

RE: AEC MKIII SCRATCH BUILD 1/16TH
Thanks,
Tires were built/molded/cast by myself. For the rim, I used one of the extra Pershing wheels for the hub and lugnuts and grafted a rim to it. Then, turned it down on a lathe to fit the existing chassis and new tire. It replicated the original quite closely.
The tires are exact to scale.
Now I need to finish the outer hubs. They are different from front to rear.

Darrin,
I think I've got a MF-03 (Pershing) for you. Please contact me through e-mail. I really want to see the Stag Hound and MKIII scooting around the battlefield.

Will do Kevin.
Does anyone know the desert colors for the British tanks? I'm thinking the lighter tan will show more weathering and detail.
DH
similar to this mkI

RE: AEC MKIII SCRATCH BUILD 1/16TH
Darrin,
The AEC looks awesome thus far.
I've had a lot of experience painting WWII armor from the North African campaign. British armor wasn't as yellow as the DAK desert yellow, their base coat was more of a light sand or buff color ( usually Pale Stone, Portland Stone, or Sand Yellow).
As far as painting goes the angular shape and details will really "pop" if you do some pre-shading with a darker color, such as charcoal or a coco brown before you lay down the base coat of buff. Once you have the color coat on I would add at least one round of post-shading in medium tan or yellow ochre before jumping into the weathering and detail painting. Below are two great links with info on British desert vehicles and paint schemes. If you would like, e-mail me offline and I can walk you throught the pre and post shading paint processes.

RE: AEC MKIII SCRATCH BUILD 1/16TH
DARRIN,
Are you planning a desert version? I ask because all the research I have shows the MK3 in Europe an Italy. I did find this one pic, http://static.flickr.com/69/216739334_68fc744158_m.jpg. DAK of course encourages all the desert armor possible.
British desert vehicles had the Desert Pink or the Light Stone 61 basecoat with dark green, brown or charcoal camoflage. Many variations exhisted but the Model Master light stone is a good starting point. You might try Tamiya Buff with some Dark Tan mixed 3/1. Let me get back to you as I am researching my 8th army Sherman and have a few references to peruse.

icecreamslick:
For a US tanker, that unit could be bought much cheaper by asking Karen at AAF to order it from TamiyaUSA. Item 53400, MSRP of 51 USD, but Karen can usually get about 75% less than list.
Its not properly a DMD unit, but the old traverse unit designed for the non-MF Sherman & King Tiger, as per the TamiyaUSA listing:
http://www.tamiyausa.com/product/ite...oduct-id=53400
The turret rotation switch is servo operated, and does not plug into a DMD as its title seems to claim. Its a bulky sucker, but the multiple gears allow a bit of up-shifting in traverse speed, if you want it. Even seen a few people mount it to the upper hull instead of bolting it to the tank chassis. It has a cork 'clutch' much like the clutches in the old tanks, but it is rather good.

More details.
Made some small parts for the drivers hatch. These include a radio, electrical boxes and a shift lever.
Mg is soldered out of brass and so are the engine box clamps.
Sorry for the blurry photos. They looked fine when I took them.
Now, I need to add the lights and turret details.

Would you happen to have a copy of the hull patterns you used?
I have a set of 4wd gear drive units availible that I mite able to adapt for use with your design.
