Default TAMIYA SHERMAN FIREFLY BUILD

Started a new kit this month. Most of the running gear is set up so I plan on showing the detail and paint work.

Rivet counters beware!

My idea for this Sherman comes from documentation suggesting the US had the 17pdr guns installed in a small number of tanks. I also liked the white camo pattern used to disguise the gun so I went with it.

Like my rocket Pershing, this is a what if model. Maybe a 1946 Firefly that had the HVSS suspension and the Firefly armament. I am also implementing an interesting camo scheme that I found on a Dragon armor 1/72nd Sherman.
As for details, I added some soldered brass covers the wood nose mounted storage plank and alot of dents/damage. Wood ration boxes, chains and sleeping gear will fill the rear of the hull.

Here is the paint scheme and some of the progress:

I had the same inspiration after seeing this topic:

http://www.missing-lynx.com/gallery/...flysz48_1.html

It will give me an excuse to use a longer barrel in a turret that doen't have to be the T-23. All I need to do is make the 17pdr mantlet and the rest of the details are easy.

But, it's very low on the 'to build' list.

thanks for the info.

Love the look of the long barrel Shermans. Here is the article I found for the inspiration:

One more shot showing the barrel camo. Supposed to trick the Germans into thinking It had the 105 gun.

Well done. You have done good research. The Americans did have a few 17pdr installed but used the rounded rear turret instead of squared.

The Firefly has been a favourite for some time. The barrel is quite accurate, where did you get it?

BTW Are you planning to have the single barrel or the dummy 105 out the end of the turret?

Great build!

Thanks,

I'm going with the single barrel version. Just waiting for the battle system now so I can close the turret up.
Got the barrel off ebay for about $20.

DH,

Any progress? You should white-wash it when you are done.

Hey Ethan,

A bit of detail work but no photos. I will post them after the holiday break. I did add some lead to the inside of the new radio box. It helps to balance the turret out.

Back from vacation and the Firefly is done. Here are a few in progress shots during painting. Very happy with the final result. Camo is a nice change for the Sherman.

Weathering and details. Came up with some new ways to get the rusted metal look and it came out great. As always, ration boxes are real wood but the tool handles are still plastic. (sorry Ethan). Barrel camo is very convincing.

Now, lets build the T34..............

Nice tank FFR

That's one of the best i've seen.

I would like to buy a Sherman and convert it to a Firefly but it seem's that the turret kit is no longer available.

Doe's anyone know of a source?

Thanks,

I hear there are still some unbuilt ones.
Does anyone see a market for this kit?
How about a new cast hull? I have been thinking about producing these for some time now.

Any feedback would be appreciated.............

Hey, can you explain the new ways for the "rusted metal" look. Would help alot of people, including myself.

Had a great battleday last week. Here is a shot of the firefly near a burned out town. The effectiveness of the barrel camo is very obvious.

That's a good Firefly! Makes me want to get a Sherman!

You are right on the gun camo, must have really worked in real life.
