RE: what motors
you can use speed 400 motors to replace the stock 380 ones, but you will have to also replace the electronics as 400 motors pull more amp'age than the stock HL boards can handle

RE: what motors
Yes, I had Speed400s in my tank for several months before I took out for a real thrashing, lost reverse on one motor. Performance was great though, should work nice with El Mod electronics.

RE: what motors
Now you tell me about the boards. I put speed 400's in my HL pershing and blew out the left track side of the board- smoked it. It just sits on the shelf waiting for one of the new companies to offer a battle system that is Tamiya compatable. .

RE: what motors
im not too sure how well the el-mod electronics will work with 400 motors as they were specifically designed to work with 380 ones.
from a quick check of the el-mod specifications they are rated upto 4amps, not sure howmany amps 400 motors will pull.
the clark system (due april) is rated upto 20amps, and will run motors upto 540.

RE: what motors
Hi Guy's if you want more power why don't you just try running a 8.4 7 cell battery pack... on most all rc's i ever had that run on 7.2Volts all there electronics can handle running on 8.4 volts also... I never did it but it should work...... alot less strain than putting in lower wind motors.
you probably will have to get a 8.4V pack with one cell on the top (hump pack) and grind a hole in the tanks battery holder compartment for it to fit.

RE: what motors
Hi guys,
thought I would just chip in here.......the speed 400 motors come in 3 voltage ratings: 4.8v, 6.0v and 7.2v......the lower the voltage rating, the higher the rpm and the amps it will pull (depending on the load)....the 7.2v class of motor is regarded as a 'softer' motor, with lower RPM, higher torque ability at lower amps.......I'm guessing a bit but I would say that on six cells, the 7.2v motor would pull less than 4 amps in our tanks......this is the motor to try if you are going to..........just a bit of info I picked up from my electric flight dabbling........hope it's useful......
cheers

RE: what motors
Those are the ones I used, the 7.2v Speed400s. Heavy driving/turning in sugar sand blew the transistor on the left side reverse. Have swapped them out but just might put them back in and install the cooling fans to blow on the heatsink.

RE: what motors
yeah I guess they must be a bit marginal then..........heavy driving will cause them to pull more current......oh well.........keep with the 380's then to be safe..........

RE: what motors
Can you inprove on the 380's then? meaning the stock ones dont look great quality, are there benifits in fitting better made 380's etc???

RE: what motors
To find out what is better we first need to know exactly what we've got. The white capped Suntech's are 385 motors, but which version? I made a post a couple of weeks ago that went unanswered.

Shenloco, don't you have a tachometer? I was going to buy one and that Watts Up Meter but right now I'm saving for the PZIII. If my wife sees another package from Mato or Tower she's gonna shoot me!

RE: what motors
Hi Marting,
The speed 400 motors are excellent motors and of good quality.....I use them all the time in my electric flight models.......I am a bit surprised that a 7.2v s400 pulls a lot of current in our tanks......I will do some measurements on this when I get a chance just to see what is happening........as for improving on our 380 quality, not sure really what alternatives there are....the S400 range are seen as the definitve replacement for the 380.........

RE: what motors
Yes you are right, since Power = Voltage X Current, more power will be drawn.......the increased voltage will make the motor turn faster (more RPM's) but it will also draw more current usually, resulting in a power increase but the increased current may not be healthy for some of the PEC components........

RE: what motors
Bringing this up again..can someone just confirm, which are the high torque motors, the black topped ones or white? I have bunches of both lying around and my 131 is struggling a bit with all the metal, I need to see if I have high torues in or if not I wil fit them. She has black ones in right now.
