I am at the point in my build where I have installed all the electronics and wiring in the bottom half of the turret. In testing everything out today, all seemed to work perfectly except the recoil of the tank. When the main gun fires, the tank jerks forward rather than backward. I have tried resetting the DMD and reversing the channels on my transmitter, but nothing seems to work. Has this happened to anyone? Is it something that can be fixed?

If your drive and turning motors are set up right in the gear box and all of the color coded wires are matched up, it's got me stumped. The only thing I can think of is the initial radio setup steps. Do you have everything hooked up to the DMD yet? If not, that could have something to do with it, possibly.
BTW, what radio system are you using with it?

All wires are matched up, all turning motors are installed correctly, all was hooked up to the DMD when the receiver was set. The tank moves and turns and does everything else according to what it is supposed to do per the r/c instructions with the kit. I have the Futaba 4ch Attack transmitter and nothing appears to be wrong with it.
Maybe the tank is supposed to recoil that way?

Tank should recoil backwards, regardless of turret orientation.
If the tank moves forward and reverse as normally expected from the radio controls, then the recoil action should follow suit.
Probably too minor of an issue to return to Tamiya if everything else works as expected.

Everything else does work as expected. The recoil issue is minor, in my opinion, but for the bucks I shelled out for this thing, I would expect it to be pretty close to perfect as far as Tamiya's parts go.
